Dodge racing boss cites bad luck

Michael Delahanty, as head of Dodge's racing efforts, would like for at least one or two of his guys to start turning some heads. What has been wrong with the Dodge teams since Ryan Newman's Daytona 500 win? Toyota, Ford and sometimes even Chevrolet, are doing well, but Dodge? "The quick and easy answer is 'bad luck,' " Delahanty said. "You've seen it, race after race. "Just look at Richmond: Carpentier gets spun, goes flying up the track; Kurt Busch drives right into him ? and Montoya spins into the back of them." That's three Dodge drivers taken out in one fell swoop. "And go back a week earlier to Talladega," Delahanty said. "In the last couple of laps we had five Dodges taken out, and four of the five were in the top 12. "How many bad-luck weekends can you get, where our guys are just in the wrong spot at the wrong time?" Well, what about horsepower? Does Dodge need to get its new engine on line faster? Would that help Dodge teams qualify better, and thus perhaps avoid some bad luck? -- Winston Salem-Journal

I'm not sure Dodge is lagging in the HP dept. They have shown moments of exceptional power throughout the year. Look at how many times Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman have come up thru the pack to lead the race.

Showing well during the race only to have it turn sour at the end seems to be biting the Dodge boys a lot this year.

Still, Ryan, Kasey, Montoya and Labonte are in the top 20 with Kurt in 22nd. That means each of the Dodge shops has a car within striking distance of "The Chase" and at least 2, would be in it except for "bad luck"...

maybe so, but Tony is in 8th place in points plus has 4 Top 5 finishes, none of the Dodge guys can claim being even close to that!

This sounds like Delahanty is preparing to talk to his boss during his periodic performance review. Other than Newman's win and Robbie Gordon's decal debacle, Dodge hasn't shown me much this year. If Delahanty is the "key person" at Dodge, he's got to be on the "hot seat" this year. An example is Ganassi Racing. Chip Ganassi has a "first rate" organization and Chip expects all of his cars to be winners. Certainly, Chip is going to be talking to the Dodge people about better engines.

Yes, there certainly seems to be something lacking in the Dodge performance.

I don't call it bad luck when almost all the dodges aren't doing much of anything.
