Is next car of tomorrow a hybrid?

NASCAR chairman Brian France told the Arizona Republic last weekend the series is examining ways to be more environmentally friendly. "It's going to vary from the actual fuel we use to power the cars to looking at a green series," France told the Phoenix newspaper. France also said series officials are working on a prototype vehicle. Brett Bodine, NASCAR's director of cost research, said officials are looking at options of how to power the vehicle. "We haven't committed to anything. We're still doing research," Bodine said. "Is it a hybrid? Is it an ethanol situation? Is it a diesel situation? There's a lot of things other than racing fuel to power a vehicle." Bodine said officials started work on this more than a year ago. The IndyCar series powers its cars with ethanol, but Bodine says that's not possible yet in NASCAR. "We've got some manufacturers that aren't ready to do that with their product," he said. "We've got a big garage area that we've got to be prepared to make sure we make the right decisions for everybody." -- News-Record

Maybe Kenny Wallace could go the Steam/hot air route. Kenny would be a big winner in that case !!

It's ok... I'm prepared for her. I've got a life sized card board cut out of Tony. If she comes at me, I'll just put that in front of me to distract her

Re: Is next car of tomorrow a hybrid?

I am not a mechanic but if you were to go with Ethanol would that not eliminate the Carburator and make NASCAR go to fuel injected Turbos? That will likely increase power and speed and make the Superspeedways more dangerous.

Diesel is cleaner but not very much. Hey how about 'Bio-Diesel'. Imagine the 43 car draft going by and then smelling Taco Bell.......

Electric? I don't think I could watch NASCAR run electric cars.

How about Synthtic fuel. They were making it back in the 40's but big oil didn't like that. Perhaps they can do some research at NASCAR about the 'Fuel of Tomorrow' and come up with something.

Re: Is next car of tomorrow a hybrid?

I can think of few things which will make my heart beat faster and the hair stand on the back of my neck than the tremendous "whooosh" of a hybrid going down the straight at the Brickyard.

You wouldn't necesarily need turbos.
And you could reduce displacement and/or (if turbocharged) regulate/restrict boost.

This is an idea.
Syntethic fuel was also used in Europe in sportcar/endurance racing and GP/F1 racing. But big oil didn't like in Europe either.
