California Speedway rolls out the red carpet...

...just not for me and you!

I think it's time for Gillian Zucker and NASCAR to admit they made a huge mistake giving Fontana a second race on Labor Day. Couple this stupid "Hollywood celebrities" promo with the California Speedway Girls deal they have this year, and you're looking at a desperate attempt to save what cannot be saved.

It can be saved, quite easily too. I don't think there would be any difficulty cutting a deal to revive the Southern 500, so NASCAR would just have to admit their mistake and reverse it, but we know there is no hope of that ever happening.

Re: California Speedway rolls out the red carpet...

The only part of the Cali. races I watch is the first 10 laps and then I try to make it back about 20 minutes before it ends. And if I don't even get to watch any of it, I don't feel like I've missed anything. I don't know why they gave them 2 races.

Thinking Hollywood will help fill seats in Fontana is beyond my comprehension. Since when did "Hollywood" relate to the everyday NASCAR fan that sells out the Bristol night race every year?

And why is NASCAR so against having a cup race in Kentucky? Move the Labor Day race there and see how quick the stands get filled, without "Hollywood's" help. Or as BringBackWilkesboro said, revive the Southern 500. Anything but a second race in California.

I too find it hard to get into the Races at California. I watch the flyover and see what actor waves the green and then go play with the kids. I'll catch the three or four hilights on SPEED later that evening.

If I was IRL or CART I would schedule my races on the same Sundays as the Michigan and California races. Ratings would skyrocket.

I know the Busch race doesn't draw that big of crowds, but as I watched the race last night I was truly amazed to see only about 1 in 10 seats occupied. I would have expected that number to be closer to 1 in 4.

If California can't do better at filling the stands, NASCAR needs to move at least one of the left coast oval races to more fertile grounds.

Yeah, Ducky. I, too, noticed the lack of butts in the seats last night (Our local race was rained out).

First of all, IRT the "Red Carpet..." Total Male Bovine Feces! Let me ask some questions:
(1) Where do the majority of the attendees come from at a California race? Ans: Southern California
(2) Who does the Oklafornia Speedway trot out to stake its claim on glitz and glamor? Ans: A bunch of "B List" celebs.
(3) Pray tell me how impressed the local SoCal people are with "B List" celebs? Hell, these are people they can see picking up cocaine from their local dope dealer or see filming on location out in the valley somewhere! Maybe the devotees of People, and E!, are impressed by these bozos, but I'd wager it means little to the readers of Circle Track and Speed Sport News.

SoCal is major league stick and ball and minor league motor sports country. Let it stay that way! It was a stinko idea to move a race as revered and as steeped in tradition as the Southern 500 to Fontana and it sucks even more to let it remain there. I did think, while watching last night's Cup Lite race, that some drivers rim-riding the track to make it appear like it was another Darlington was a thoughtful touch, but it failed.

Off the top of my head I can't think of another decision NASCAR has made, and Gawd knows, they've made some real "winners," that comes as close to being an absolute PR disaster as the moving the Labour Day date to SoCal has become.

NASCAR would have to be deaf, blind and dumb to ignore the uproar from the fans and NOT return the Southern 500 to its rightful place, Darlington. The way NASCAR is ignoring the will of the fans on this one reminds me of the way our Imperial Government treats our southern border, but that's another story. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!

IF they were to have a race this weekend (I still am in denial and look at this weekend as an off weekend for Cup) I hope it isn't a replay of the last couple races I've watched this weekend. Keslowski's wreck was frightening last night. I'm just glad he came back down on the wall and didn't get tangled up in the fence, ala Bobby Allison at Talladega. Also, the kid that did the four barrel rolls in the Friday ARCA race at E. St Louis sure had a thrill. I never thought a stocker could roll that many times on a tight mile track!
