Re: Favorite Drivers & Misc

hi terri, aka flip.

my first favorite driver was my brother, Clarence Lovell (1972-73) he introduced me to circle track racing after I got out of the navy in '67 so guess that's when I became a NASCAR fan.

right now my favorite driver is my son, but he doesn't race NASCAR. he worked on Rich Bickle's CTS and Busch team in '98 & 99. we have a couple late models we race in Texas and plan to make a trip to Mobile/Pensacola area to race next year (wanted to do it this year but he's recovering from a ruptured disk so we're taking it easy right now.)

I like a lot of drivers and will root for which ever one "feels" right at the time. there's a few I don't like and won't take up time and space with their names...

like you, I enjoy just about any kind of motorsports - if it's got a motor, I probably have seen it in competition (personally or on TV)

I've been to Texas, Charlotte, Dover, Trenton, and Texas World plus a plethora of short tracks (not necessarily NASCAR related.) drove past Talladega and Atlanta on my way to visit son in NC, but they weren't open at the time. no favorite .. I like them all.

my mama called me Charles, but most everyone else calls me Charlie or "hey you!" "Salt Shaker" is my CB handle and Racer Duck is my online moniker...

Re: Favorite Drivers & Misc

Thank you Kathy & Charlie . Nice to meet both of you !

Racer Duck aka Charlie I like Richie and miss not seeing him on the circuit .I got the chance to meet him in Atlanta in '96.

One thing I can say for sure about Rich is that he is fearless and aggressive. I watched him in a race one time where he drove right up on a guy's fender well .LITERALLY!

I didn't take this picture and wish that I 'd had a digital camera back when I met him .

Re: Favorite Drivers & Misc

my son tells me that Rich has one of the most awsome short track records around .. something like 500 wins. he's the only driver to win the Snowball 5 times. I've got a picture of the team (with my son in it) taken later in the night after his 5th win. my SLM is one of his Snowball cars.

he also collects: beer cans and mopar muscle. he has an extensive collection of beer cans, some very rare, at his home on Lake Norman. while my son was working for him (he was the only "mechanic" in the place, so was responsible for keeping the mopar muscle running well in addition to his team duties) Rich bought a 67 hemi 'Cuda with less than 10K miles on it - heard he paid upwards of $70K. that was my son's introduction to hemi's.

Rich turned down a lucrative Dodge offer for CTS in '99 while he was racing Busch. Said he felt it would be moving "backward" .. had he taken it, he would probably have been "promoted" when Dodge setup their Cup teams. I think that started his downhill slide. I see his name in an occasional CTS race, but think he's pursuing other interests. thought we would see him last year, but we had to cancel our trip at the last minute.

Re: Favorite Drivers & Misc

Hi Terri
I imagine you can guess who I am for from my name. LOL. I have been a Nascar fan since the early 70's. I was only a teen-ager back then. I was a Richard Petty fan till the day he retired. Yes I was there to see his last race and Jeff's first cup race.

I have been to Bristol(my home track), Atlanta, Daytona, Talledega, Richmond, charlotte, Darlington, I was at the inagural Brickyard 400 to see Jeff win it, Martinsville, Michigan, The Rock and N. Wilksboro also. If there are more I can't think of them now. Mostly just the southern tracks.

I also enjoy riding horses. I have one horse and 1 dog. My name is Tammy.

In Busch and Truck racing I usually just enjoy good racing. I am going to see all 3 races at Bristol in August. I also enjoy dirt track racing.

Re: Favorite Drivers & Misc

Hmmm... Favorites and miscellanious. I'll try to keep it short.

My first favorite:

It's been a while since I've had a clear cut favorite, but I've had many in my day. Most of were guys my grandfather worked for and was able to get me close to, but in the later years, I just liked em cuase of the type of racer they were. I've posted many of these before.

The first one I remember being drawn to was Darel Daringer, but I just can't remember why. I was only 5 years old in '66 when he had his most successful season, my grandfather never worked with any of his teams and there was very little exposure to get my attention on him. The only connection I recall was the fact that I was living in North Carolina at the time and we were in weaverville for a race he won in '66.

The first guy my grandfather got me to watch was Dick Hutcherson when he worked briefly with John Holman and Ralph Moody. He also spent time with Tom Friedkin, Jim Paschal as the driver in the late 60s, and then Neil Bonnet with Nord Krauskopf for part of the '77 season.

From there I became a fan of Pete Hamilton and Cale Yarborough for various reasons, and Tim Richmond is the last actual favorite I had. I also like Rick Crawford in the truck series.

Tracks:

My dad brought us to many tracks in the southeast, but my favorites were Asheville-Weaverville Speedway and of course, North Wilkesboro Speedway.

First name is Rick by the way.

Re: Favorite Drivers & Misc

My alltime favourite was Tim Richmond. I also have rooted mightily for Junior Johnson, Fred Lorenzen, and Curtis Turner.

BGN favourite was, hands down, Sam Ard.

CTS, if I pull for anyone I pull for my homeboy, Rick Crawford.

There just isn't any of the current crop of drivers whom I give a hoot about. Basically anyone who (a) speaks his mind, and (b) has open wheel history is a little ahead of the remainder.

Tracks you'd be familiar with: Daytona (4 - Beach -1) Michigan (3), Pocono (1), Indianapolis (NASCAR-1, Indy cars - around 15 or 16 ), Bristol (asphalt - 4 concrete -0), Charlotte (2), Darlington (1), Martinsville (4),

Tracks you might not be familiar with: Hickory NC, N. Wilksboro, NC; Winchester, IN; Dayton, OH; Marysville, TN; So. Boston, VA, Richmond, VA (fairgrounds); Jacksonville, FL, Santa Fe Speedway and Soldier's Field (both in Chicago),and E. Islip, Long Island. Some of these I attended for nightly racing, not NASCAR.

My first NASCAR race was the last beach race in '58. (We were on vacation and went to it). I followed NASCAR thru magazine articles (primarily in Mechanix Illustrated written by Tom McCahill. Also SpeedSport news, which we got each week at our local track)

One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't get into NASCAR soon enough to see Karl Kiekhaeffer Chrysler 300's race.

Proof that Bob has done it all. Of course, I know that there's probably still more you wish you'd done.

A Bearcat, eh? I'm from a ways down White River, Anderson. I did my first two years of college at Ball State. We use to race at the little track they had there in Muncie. Back when I was a kid I almost bought the farm at Winchester one afternoon. That was when they had the little concrete walls out almost on the track. A car flipped over the walls and landed in our pits. Got REAL crowded, REAL fast!

TRIVIA ALERT

Did you know that Darlington is a larger-scale copy of Winchester? Brasington got the idea for Darlington in 1948 when he attended the Indy 500 then went to a sprint car race at Winchester the following weekend. He was taken by the speed they attained and went back to So. Carolina and, using Winchester as a model, constructed Darlington. The banks and turn radius are the same, the only difference is the size and the tighter turn one because of the pond.

Nope. Not at all. Just evidence that I'm older than dirt and grew up in an era when hanging around race tracks and race people was affordable and fun.
