NASCAR Safety

NASCAR i believe has tried hard to improve the safety of their sport in recent years

and i think the Coca-Cola 600 is a testament to that

many of us i think marveled at how Jeff Gordon was able to walk away from this wreck

is there more NASCAR can do ........... if so what would you suggest ?

It's amazing to me how few serious injuries there are in this sport. Gordon hit hard but I gotta tell ya, that crash at Pocono last year actually turned my stomach. I don't know how he walked away from that, either. I learned that seeing it in person is a lot more vivid than on TV, that's for sure! Or any of the crashes, like Stewart's last year, or the Shrub's this year. (That might have been Busch series). It's a testament to some fine engineering. I can't imagine what else they can do to improve, unless they don't let drivers like Tony Raines or the hot headed Shrub near the track anymore. Did you see Marco Andretti's crash at Indy? I just about pooped my knickers! But he walked away, too. Hat's off to the engineer's and designer's of all these cars.

We may all disagree on a lot of things, but one thing I think we all can agree on -- NASCAR (and the IRL for that matter) have done a great job making driver safety a priority. Hat's off to 'em for that!

Re: NASCAR Safety

I think there is more they can do with the cars but it is a matter of how it will affect the speed or handling of it.

Re: NASCAR Safety

is safety worth speed ?

let's say for argument (we all know i love argument) that they can make a Cup car where no one ever gets hurt but it will only do 165 mph ....... is it worth it ? ......... how about if it will only go 140 mph ?

Re: NASCAR Safety

i have no problem with it bro ........ just seems some complain about restrictor plates and i thought they were for safety

Bill Elliot went 212 ...... what good would it be if today they can go 225 if someone is killed every other week

The restrictor plate issue is a prime example of what I said. Speed was reduced and inhibited and the racing is still (somewhat) good. Restrictor plates is another subject. Not really the same as safety.

I think that you're right.

What would I suggest? Do something about the plate races. Do something to give the drivers more throttle response and keep them from running in 20+-car packs.

Yeah, I know. Talladega and Daytona are exciting, what with the constant threat of "The BIG one." It's dangerous as the devil. NASCAR could look at doing something to change it, while keeping the speeds low enough to ensure the cars don't end up in the stands after a wreck.
