| Re: Throwing Stuff No injuries, some arrrests at Talledega: Talladega Superspeedway officials said no injuries were reported from the postrace beer-can barrage. Less than 10 people were detained, but hundreds of cans littered the track. NASCAR vice president Jim Hunter and Talladega Superspeedway president Grant Lynch released statements three hours after the Aaron's 499, which Jeff Gordon won to earn his 77th career victory and pass Dale Earnhardt on the all-time list. "We warned our fans about throwing debris on the racetrack and the consequences of such actions," Lynch said in the statement. "Additional security was brought in for the grandstands. We had a plan in place. I was in the grandstands at the conclusion of the race, and as promised, we enforced our policies and took appropriate action on individuals we were able to accurately identify. We aren't going to let less than one percent of out fans spoil a record-setting weekend," Lynch added in the statement. Hunter's statement echoed Lynch's comments. "It's very unfortunate a few unruly fans can ruin things for a lot of people," Hunter said in the statement. "The track put a lot of effort into preventing this type of behavior. Our fans are passionate, but this type of behavior doesn't represent the majority of our fans."(ESPN.com)(4-30-2007) |

| Re: Throwing Stuff these are the same fans that pp and moan about having to pay 5bucks for a warm CUP of beer. what other professional sport allows you to bring in your own cooler stocked with ice cold beverage of choice. I see this going away in the near future.

| Are the majority of Nascar fans just complete jerks? Now that I've gotten your attention with the title, I'll word it a little more delicately. Of all the major sports in the United States, Nascar continues to be the only one where every week, you can expect some idiots in the grandstands to throw things onto the track at the end of a race. When the Packers and Bears play an NFL game where the home team loses, you don't see their fans throwing things onto the field. In baseball, Yankees/Red Sox, a bitter rivalry full of animosity but still, Yankees fans don't shower the field with debris when Boston beats them. So I ask again, what in the world are these idiots thinking to throw beer, toilet paper and whatever else they get their hands on, onto the track after a "rival" driver wins. Nascar of ALL sports should be least likely to do that. There's technically only a 1/43 chance that your driver will win on any given Sunday where as most major US sports are 50%. It isn't as if Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch or any other hated drivers go out of their way to talk bad about fans. It's time for Nascar to take the same approach as any other legitimate sport and kick fans out/bar them from attending if they can't control themselves. These are grown men and women, not 8 year olds. |

2nd i cant stand stereotypes ...... a group is hardly ever totally on one side or the other ........ there were around 100,000 people at this race and 100,000 objects were not tossed onto the track 3rd idiot fans are not only in NASCAR as your post suggests you may not be old enough to remember but im sure ithers here will back me up ...... i dont remember the teams involved (i believe it was Philly and NY) but they threw snowballs and batteries onto the field in one case they injured an assistant coach remember the idiot and his son that ran onto the baseball field and beat on that coach remember when the fan threw the cup of beer on Ron Artest and dont even get me started on soccer hooligans

| Re: Are the majority of Nascar fans just complete jerks? Majority is not correct, i'll give that without argument. However, the incidents you're pointing out stand out in memory even now, years after they've happened. Also, I'm not sure about the battery throwing but the father/son attacker were prosectued. Most of the fans involved in the Pacers-Pistons brawl were also prosecuted. If I'm not mistaken, the man that threw the beer was even barred from attending another game for a year. (It was either him or the guy that tossed a chair) And, even though I'm a soccer fan, it is not a major US sport, NOR do you see soccer rioting here in the United States. The fact is, these incidents stand out in your mind because they are a rare occurence in other sports. 5 years from now, do you anticipate people talking about those "hooligans" who threw beer cans, bottles and trash onto the track whenever Jeff Gordon won a race? I'd be shocked if they are. The reason being, fans don't seem to care too much. If other paying customers complained to Nascar about the behavior of the obnoxious ones, I'm willing to bet they'd start taking action. Look at what Cincinatti Bengals ownership did, even going so far as setting up a "Jerk hotline" in where fans can call it while at the stadium and said fans are removed from the game. So yes, it's true that the majority of fans aren't throwing things onto the track or making a scene. However, it's also true that the majority of fans aren't showing outrage and vocalizing complaints about the behavior of these select few. And yes, it is harder to "throw a net around" 190,000 people. You have football stadiums that hold 80,000 plus and look at the massive number of security personnel you see in the stands. You can't go anywhere without seeing someone in the bright yellow security vests. If Nascar took that same approach, i.e. provide enough security to handle that big of a crowd if that's the capacity you're going to allow, the problem should take care of itself. | Re: Are the majority of Nascar fans just complete jerks? Recepie for Complete Jerks just add 100,000 fans and a dash of beer (more like a couple gallons) and that's what you get!and if you want you can also add a sporting association that doesn't control the fans like they should (NASCAR) |
