NASCAR considering changes to All-Star format

Associated Press
Posted: 6 hours ago
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR's championship-deciding system isn't the only thing about to be changed. The annual All-Star race is also being examined by series officials for tweaks to its format, The Associated Press has learned.
Lowe's Motor Speedway president Humpy Wheeler confirmed Tuesday that talks are under way to make changes to the Nextel All-Star Challenge. The race has been run at the suburban Charlotte track 20 of its 21 years.

Re: NASCAR considering changes to All-Star format

NASCAR really needs to calm down and let ONE season go by without changes. Since 2002 there hasnt been a full season without huge changes.

Quote from the article...

".....and track and Nextel officials have worked tirelessly to create an atmosphere similar to other sports' All-Star events."

Why do they insist on trying to treat racing like stick and ball sports? There is absolutely nothing comparable to them. If Na$car wants to be like other sports, why dont they try banning competitors from displaying corporate sponsorship on their cars and uniforms?

Must be they have found some way to extract more money from the fans. Any other change would be useless, that would coincide with the race itself.

Only in my sweat dreams would that happen. If it did, that would be awesome.

Re: NASCAR considering changes to All-Star format

My point is, even though he does (or at least did) commercials for them, you don't see Donovan McNabb wearing a Campbells Chunky Soup ad on his uniform.
Na$car has gotten out of control with sponsorship. I still can't get over how fast they make sure the winner gets that big gulp of Coke on camera before an interview. Heck, he doesnt even have to win, he can just be roaming around in the pits and they make sure his drink sponsor is covered. There is no other sport or form of entertainment that is so blatant with commercialism.
I remember one time a couple of years ago in the pits, Jeff Gordon had a couple of seconds to chomp some Lays potato chips and guzzle his Pepsi before an interview. He nearly choked on the chips trying to get the product in his mouth fast enough on camera along with the Pepsi. I dont see him with a Lays bag in his hand anymore.

I would suspect that NA$CAR get some revenue from all the sponsors in the situation you are referring to but .... the team/driver are the real benefactors of the sponsorship dollars. I wouls suspect that everytime Jeff can say or show the Pepsi product he gets some renumeration for it. If he can drink it, show it and say thanks to them I'm sure it is much cheaper for Pepsi to advertise that way than it is to pay mega bux to NBC, TNT or whoever.

A few years ago when they used to pay whoever was in the lead at the half it was a must that the driver have the gasoline sponsors decal on the car. There were a few drivers that refused to do it so they were not eligible for the money. It's not just NA$CAR that is in it for the dollar.

Re: NASCAR considering changes to All-Star format

Petty enterprises does carry beer/liquor decals, and there for is not eligible for poll money or a spot in the bud shootout.

wasn't the half way leader bonus from gillett razors, or maybe gatorade.

At one point not to many years ago it was Union 76. They added money to it every week that the pole sitter didn't win or wasn't in the lead at the halfway mark. Something like that anyway. I'm sure someone remembers.

I'm sure you meant Petty does not carry beer/liquor decals. I heard that is because Richard promised his mother that he never would.
