Nascar to implement rookie orientation next year.

NASCAR will implement a one-day rookie orientation seminar next February for newcomers to its three national touring series. The annual program will be designed for rookies and drivers 22 and under, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Wednesday. It will focus on NASCAR rules and policies as well as the adjustment to competing on the national stock-car circuit. "It's something we've been looking at for the last two or three years," Poston said. "We looked at what all the other leagues do, and one thing we realized is all the other leagues do this, and there seems to be a lot of benefit both for the league and their participants." The program will include University of Central Florida professor Dr. Richard Lapchick of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports to address professional and personal conduct and Aegis Laboratories' Dr. David Black to address the NASCAR substance-abuse policy. NASCAR Chairman Brian France also would be one of the presenters with other NASCAR executives, NASCAR's medical liaisons, series directors, veteran drivers and track operators. "We want to do this to touch base with drivers that are new to the national series and make sure that they have an opportunity at their very start to get face-to-face with NASCAR executives, to understand the sport and who we are," Poston said. "It's really to welcome to the national series, welcome them to the sport and also to answer any questions that they have." NASCAR has an 18-year-old age limit for its three national touring series and has toyed with the idea of increasing the age minimum for the Sprint Cup Series. Poston said that is still under consideration.

Now this is a good idea.... I question on how they can introduce them to the rules when the rules are suspect, but a good idea none the less.

Congratulations to NA__AR! They've actually made two rules this season which make sense (Double file restarts and now this one.) A big tip of the hat to someone in the NA__AR power structure who apparently has a brain which doesn't reside next to his prostate.

Now, raise the minimum age for Cup drivers to 21 and we'll have something.

A NA__AR oriented "Charm School." The military has been doing this for a Century, with its Officer Candidate School (affectionately known as "Knife&Fork School"). Like OCS, NA__AR's little class will probably follow the computer principle of GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out).

(Makes you wonder how I ever made Chief, doesn't it Steve? <g>)

Bob I don't think we want to go down that road. In my last squadron the 1st class I worked for earned his crows as a BM and then switched to AT. Dunno if he ever made Chief or not but I do know he was dumber than a box of rocks as an AT. He did look good behind his desk sucking down never ending cups of java ... maybe he did make Chief !!!

Peter Principle germane (People ultimately rise to their own level of incompetence)

I think a NA__AR "Charm School" could be a good thing, considering the image in the public eye that NA__AR yearns to portray. The fans are owed better than Shrub beating a Sam Bass guitar against a stage. Since we're now getting drivers as they leave puberty, and thus NA__AR runs the danger of getting such a child whose parents didn't instruct him in social graces and how to, at least, at like an adult, maybe this isn't such a bad deal.

However, if NA__AR uses it to mold future drivers into Matt Kenseth, Jimmy Johnson or the "New" Tony Stewart personality clones, where never is heard a discouraging word in relation to all things NA__AR, then it's just another indoctrination center.

My hope is for the school to be instruction and not just indoctrination. Knowing this new NA__AR, my bet is on the latter.

Re: Nascar to implement rookie orientation next year.

This is probably a stupid question, but why is this limited to driver's under the age of 22? A rookie is a rookie regardless of age, right? Is it that they think older rookies won't do anything dumb? I'd like to see it for all rookies. And Bob, you have "chief" written all over you. I mean that totally as a compliment. Some of my very favorite people are Navy Senior/Master Chiefs.

If you look back, it says rookies AND drivers under 22.

I "think" this is aimed at the future Kyle Busch's. I agree that 22 seems a bit prejudicial but I look at it this way: A rookie driver of over 22 has usually been around the local tracks for enough time to have the juvenile delinquency kicked out of him (symbolically or literally) a couple times for acting like a spoiled punk kid. Yeah, some will undoubted slip through the cracks but a 22 is an (or has a fairly decent chance of being a) adult than does some acne-covered kid whose voice has yet to change.

I think that the "head up your colon attitude" has worn off it's welcome with NA_CAR. At least I hope so.
