After watching Fridays Talledega practice.. After watching Fridays Talledega practice I think Sundays race is not going to go the way NASCAR wanted after making the plates smaller. If you didn't catch it the ONLY way to pass even in the draft was to hook up with another car. By hook up I mean beat and bang on his bumper and bump draft all the way around the track. Two cars could hook up and come from outside the draft and pass it. Micheal Waltrip and Jimmy Johnson got warned (and had to come off the track) for hooking up and pushing each other. They were behind the draft and were able to pick up enough speed (10+mph) to pass a 20 car draft. NASCAR said the new rule is there must be daylight between the cars. I think it doesn't bode well for Sunday if the only way to pass is by aggresive dump drafting. They couldn't even pass by getting 4-5 cars together like before. Even after practice several drivers said that was the only way to pass...beat the car in front of you all the way around the track. Should be "interesting".

Re: After watching Fridays Talledega practice.. A crash ??? Well you know that's gonna happen at least once. It's just a matter of who is involved .... each time.

Re: After watching Fridays Talledega practice.. Sadler and Flipper on Trackside said the same thing, the only way to pass is to hook up and push someone then slingshot, if you can. Sadler says it because of the loss of HP with the new sized restrictor plate. Sounds like its going to be a wreckfest.

Re: After watching Fridays Talledega practice.. NASCAR implimented the restrictor plates to slow the cars down and be easy to slap onto existing engines. Two problems. First - it took away throttle response. Now drivers just keep it held to the floor wide open. Second - teams are buildind separate engines for plate tracks nowdays anyways. If they want to drop the horsepower and still have some throttle response why don't they go to a maximum lift on the cam. Maximum duration is too hard to police. But maximum lift takes seconds with a dial indicator. All they have to do is take off a valve cover. Oh and BTW the #48 and #55 went to #2 and #3 in practice on their hook up run. They picked up 10mph over the draft. I have to hand it to Mikey when they interviewd him he said "Well that's what people are going to do in the race, why not go out there and see what your car does and if it's going to overheat. You can't tell me with 10 to go people aren't going to push each other around. Rather find out now then later".

| Re: After watching Fridays Talledega practice.. What did they do in 06 when they repaved DEGA? The first practice showed speeds at 200mph, they said they would not change the plates. The very next day they change the plates. Race was not all that good, but they stay with those plates anyways. Now they change the plates again, and it makes things worse. IDIOTS!

Re: After watching Fridays Talledega practice.. I bet a V-6 of around 270ish cubic inches built to the same specs as a current cup car would run nearly as fast as they run now on the 2 current plate tracks. I've heard how much hp the plate drops off but can't remember off the top of my head. But the good news is then you would at least have some throttle response instead of the dead throttle they have now.
