Penske Saturn deal is off

Penske deal for Saturn from GM is off: General Motors Co. said Wednesday it would shut down its Saturn brand after an agreement with Penske Automotive Group Inc. to acquire it fell apart. Penske, citing concerns of whether it could continue to supply vehicles after a manufacturing contract with GM ran out, ended talks with GM Wednesday to acquire the brand. GM CEO Fritz Henderson said in statement that Saturn and its dealership network will be phased out. In a statement, the Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based auto retailer says an agreement with another manufacturer to continue producing Saturn vehicles after GM stopped making them fell through, leading Penske to terminate talks with GM. Penske said it negotiated terms and conditions to make Saturn cars with another manufacturer, but that company's board of directors rejected the agreement. Penske spokesman Anthony Pordon would not identify the other manufacturer. In June, GM and Penske agreed to take over the Saturn brand and related dealerships, although GM would produce the vehicles for a limited period of time. GM said Saturn vehicle owners can still go to their Saturn dealer for service and would be able to go to a certified GM dealer for service once Saturn dealerships are closed. It was expected that GM would announce the completion of Saturn's sale to Penske in the coming days.(ABC/AP)(9-30-2009)

Saw this yesterday.... I still can't believe GM wants to get rid of Saturn. I see those cars all over the place. Very popular as a first time car from parents to their kids.

It's because of the "bankrupt" deal, they were going to be gone along with the other brands dropped unless somebody picked them up. It seems that Penske was trying to make it happen for them to continue doing business.
Let's try not to go political with this!!

I will give you my two cents on Saturn. Number one is that the actual resale value versus what they tell you when you buy the car is totally different. I tried to trade one in that was a year old with a Honda dealer. He told me that he did not want the car on his lot. He made me an offer but it was an insane offer. Secondly I have found that parts & repair are expensive. I know this applies to more and more cars but they seem to have a corner on their parts. So much so that your garden variety service station is out of the loop on some repairs.

For the positive side of it the car isn't all that bad. Not sure why we were looking after a year and I'm pretty sure we didn't trade anyway. Where I am we have mega salt on the roads in the winter so the plastic body is a great deal. I like the brand we have now. Resale is great and reliability is the same. Glad I didn't buy a Saturn this year. I'm sure sales will drop way off now.

Lot more money to be made with a hummer versus a Saturn. Why do you think they keep the Corvette ??

My sons father-in-law had a 2007 (I think) Corvette. Price tag was about $86,000. I don't think he was overly interested in the fact it got crap for mileage. I did get to drive it. Just don't punch those things when the road is damp. Not fun when you see the rear end of $86,000 coming around to the front. I elected to behave myself after that event.

Re: Penske Saturn deal is off

I was sad to hear this. I still love the Saturn Vue. What's strange is I thought Saturn was one of the only brands that was making GM some $. Oh well. Times change. Guess I'll just have to get me a nice truck

Nowhere near as fast or as dangerously. I suspect to those who saw it happen they may have been awe struck in one way or another also. I know I was. When the back end was coming forward all I could think of was "how am I gonna explain this ?????"

Re: Penske Saturn deal is off

I assume you are not permitted one at this point. Even when you can have one they'll charge like $300 a year or semester don't they ???
