The Drive For 5

OK .... so we are solidly into the Chase now and at this point it is anyone's game. Tony could make it three. JPM could become the first foreign born winner. Jimmie could become the only 4 time consecutive winner. Jeff could make it 5 this time around. Like him or not he has the chance to do it. As a team they have done well this year. Not as good as some but better than others. There are a couple teams with no chase experience which may be of help to Jeff. Setting aside you like or dislike for him personally what are his chances of getting # 5 and how would you feel if he does get # 5 ???

The chances are high, but he hasn't faired well since the inception of the chase. Time will tell.

there are twelve drivers that have a shot to win the Cup .... which means all things being equal they would all have about an 8% chance of winning it .... that being said i dont think all things are equal .. some are just better then others ..... i would say JG has a less then 3% chance to win it

ok .... more of my plain old opinion here ...... championships get more and more tough to acquire ..... imo Dale's 7 stand for more then Richard's 7 ..... along those lines i believe 5 for JG would put him about even with Richard and about one shy of Dale

HOW DO U FIGURE THAT??? FIRST HOW DO YOU FIGURE DALES 7 IS ANY BETTER THEN RICHARDS???? AND HOW WOULD JEFF'S 5 BE ON PAR WITH DALE OR RICHARDS 7?
PLEASE TELL ME WHY DALES 7 OR JEFFS 4 WERE HARDER TO WIN THEN RICHARDS 7?
I GUESS THE 3 SUPER BOWLS WON BY STEELERS IN THE 70'S DON'T EQUAL THE 3 WON BY THE PATS IN 2000!

wow dude take some Valiums and drink some green tea or something ... are you done yelling ?

first .... if you recall .... i said it was only my opinion ... nothing more nothing less ..... feel free to disagree (in all caps even)

now that that's out of the way

here is how i arrived at my opinion ..... again .. agree or not it matters little to me ..... as it is clearly my opinion and maybe no one elses

to me it all boils down to competition .... when Richard was at his peak how many drivers really gave him competition ? .... maybe 5 or 6 ......... how many gave Dale true competition at his peak ? .... maybe 10 or 12 ........ and how about JG ? ...... 15 or more

another factor for me is equipment .... again in my opinion ... Richards equipment was far superior to most all others .... like he had a Camero and they had Yugo's ..... makes a huge difference is all im saying

Re: The Drive For 5

It will be tough for the #24 this year. The #5, #11 #14 and #48 seem to have their act together and some momentum except for Tony at the moment.

I've never been a #24 fan, just plain did not care for him as he was always ahead of Jarrett except for '99. But if Jeff did win, more power to him. You wind it all, you deserve the accolades.

As far as Jeff's theoretical 5th championship being equal to Petty's 7: Do Petty's seven 2nd place finishes in the final standings count for anything? How about his 21 "top 5" finishes or his 26 "top 10" finishes in the final standings? The #3 had some impressive #'s to go along with his 7 trophies: 13 "top 5" finishes and 20 "top 10" finishes.

once again ..... and hopefully for the last time ... let me restate .... this is only my opinion ...... why anyone would get so bent out of shape i have no earthly idea

i believe racing in the 60's and 70's was absolutely nothing like it is today

today there isnt much difference between equipment and funds of drivers from 1st to 25th in the standings .... they all drive the same COT car with basically the same engine and drive-train .... heck, Jr is 21st in points and i would say he has the same stuff as Martin who is in 1st

30+ years ago when Richard was on top .... things were much different .... he had huge amounts of money backing him .... he had all the best equipment and pit crew ..... and some of you may seem not to know ..... but as i said before ... each week he only had 5 or so other drivers to seriously challenge him on a weekly basis ...... thats like having JJ - JG - Smoke - Martin and Edwards in a race, and the rest of the feild is filled out with scrubs like me and you

so with those FACTS .... just how impressive is it that Richard placed in the top 5 in points so many times ? ...... IN MY OPINION ... not real impressive

Re: The Drive For 5

I say he probably won't get it. Don't matter to me if he does or don't. The championship, to me, don't mean what it use to anymore. All it means now is, you didn't care if you didn't win as long as you were in the top 10 every week.
