| Perfect chance to win SEC slipping through USC’s fingers SOUTH CAROLINA REMAINS alive to win the SEC East Division championship, at least mathematically. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, they have not played like champions for most of this SEC season. No one knows that better than Steve Spurrier. “We’ve got a lot of problems here,” Spurrier said Monday. “We don’t do things that champions do. We’re not even close. We don’t play as mentally sound as people need to play to be even close as champions. Until we do the little things right, we can’t expect to be champions.” That is a harsh, yet accurate assessment from a coach whose team found its AWOL offense in the second half of Saturday’s loss at Tennessee. It is a half-empty evaluation of a club that played solid defense throughout the game, and a club that got standout performances on offense from receiver Kenny McKinley, running back Cory Boyd and quarterback Blake Mitchell.
