| Gamecocks one of many teams in the hunt When Steve Spurrier guided the Florida Gators to their first national championship (and his only one), the circumstances leading up to it were bizarre. In the final game of the 1996 regular season, Florida lost to Florida State, 24-21, putting the Seminoles in the Sugar Bowl and effectively ending the Gators’ hopes of going to New Orleans and playing for all the marbles. But then a series of unlikely upsets set up a rematch with Florida State. Thirty-three days following his team’s three-point loss to FSU, Florida walked off the fake grass at the Superdome with a stunning 52-20 rout of those same Seminoles, and Spurrier and the Gainesville gridders were kings of the college football world.
