USC’s Mike Davis and Cory Boyd take pride in holding onto the football, and it has been more than a year since anyone took it away from them

Robert Gillespie started backpedaling before hearing the question.

The South Carolina running backs coach figured it was a matter of time before someone asked him about his tailbacks’ tendency to protect the ball like it was their wallets. Like baseball players giving the cold shoulder to a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, Gillespie did not want to jinx Cory Boyd and Mike Davis by discussing their amazing stretch of fumble-less football.

“Aaahhhh, don’t ask me,” Gillespie said as he feigned a move for the practice field exit. “I don’t even talk about it. I don’t look at the stat.”

In that case, Gillespie and any other superstitious USC fans should stop reading before the end of this sentence: Boyd and Davis have gone 15 games and a combined 320 carries without losing a fumble.
