| Spurrier mum on QB situation against Georgia A week later, Blake Mitchell and Chris Smelley have switched roles again: Mitchell taking snaps with the first team, and Smelley watching from the sideline. Mitchell likely will start Saturday at Georgia after his return from a one-game academic suspension. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier stopped short of naming the fifth-year senior the starter, but said “there’s a good chance.” “I haven’t decided for sure,” Spurrier said. “We’ll keep it sort of suspenseful until later in the week.” If Mitchell does not start, Smelley may not be available. Smelley, who started the season-opener, is nursing a sprained shoulder and sat out Monday’s practice. “He could be doubtful this week,” Spurrier said. “He got smacked upside his head, upside his shoulder. They put a nice sandwich job on him.” Smelley, a redshirt freshman, split time with Tommy Beecher in the opener. Each threw a touchdown pass, but Beecher threw for more yardage (137 yards against 101) and Smelley threw an interception. Spurrier mum on QB situation against Georgia

| Re: Spurrier mum on QB situation against Georgia There's no surprise here...Blake Mitchell will start for USC in Athens. Chris Smelley & Tommy Beecher did well against ULL but they tended to stare down their receivers, the gameplan didn't allow for any passes more than 15 yards or so & they were quick WR screens and dump offs to the RB's more than anything. We didn't show UGA anything, I have to believe that was the key goal in our offensive playcalling against ULL. Mitchell has the most experience, he's done it on the road before, he knows the playbook the best, is the only one who can really audible on his own out of doomed plays and he gives us the best chance to win which is all Spurrier really cares about. |
