| Off-season emphasis on special teams is means to produce a spark Every kick returner remembers his first touchdown. Captain Munnerlyn’s first came on a play he never should have touched the ball. It was his sophomore year of high school against his team’s rival, and a punt landed away from him, falling on the 3-yard line. Ignoring the screams of his coach, Munnerlyn picked up the ball and scampered for the touchdown. “I just broke a lot of tackles, because I’m thinking in my head, ‘Oh coach is gonna kill me,’ said Munnerlyn, now a sophomore at South Carolina. “So I’m ready for it this year. I feel like I can take a couple to the end zone.” USC coach Steve Spurrier would like nothing better from his special teams. He has reminded everyone — the media, Munnerlyn, his coaches — that the Gamecocks have not returned a punt or kickoff for a touchdown in four years.
