| South Carolina Wide receivers: Catching on For South Carolina’s five freshman receivers, picking up the Gamecocks’ passing game can be as easy as A-B-C. Or as tricky as X-Y-Z — and a few other letters, as well. Before the first-year receivers could begin learning their routes and passing plays in Steve Spurrier’s Cock ‘n’ Fire offense, they first had to know where to line up. Doing so meant deciphering an alphabet soup of receiver positions, each of which has its own letter designation. Unlike some coaches, Spurrier prefers his receivers to become familiar with all of the receiver positions, making it about four times more challenging (for the four-receiver sets) to memorize the formations and routes than in offenses that compartmentalize their receivers.
