Gamecocks Scrimmage on Saturday The University of South Carolina football squad worked out for two and a half hours Saturday morning at Williams-Brice Stadium in its eighth of 15 spring practices. The Gamecocks ran 102 plays of a scrimmage along with some special teams work in front of approximately 3,000 fans, who soaked in another beautiful Columbia spring day. "We had a lot of good plays by a lot of guys," said Head Coach Steve Spurrier following the scrimmage. "Our quarterbacks did not play well at all. We threw careless interceptions - all three of (the quarterbacks). Whoever is coaching the quarterbacks needs to do a better job. I've done a lousy job with those guys so far. We may be a heck of a running team this year," added Coach Spurrier. "Our quarterbacks right now are not good enough to throw 30 times a game. We may have to throw about 20 and pick our spots a little better." Gamecocks Scrimmage on Saturday Last edited by Lefty Noob : 04-01-2007 at 11:49 AM.

| Re: Gamecocks Scrimmage on Saturday No, Spurrier's not just coaching them up. According to this report, "The Gamecocks rotated three quarterbacks - Blake Mitchell, Tommy Beecher and Chris Smelley - on every play. None of the three was especially effective, as they combined to complete 32-of-55 passes for 307 yards and one touchdown with five interceptions." Five picks? Ouch!

Re: Gamecocks To Scrimmage Saturday I don't see it as being a big deal ... YET. Our offensive line is being pushed around pretty bad at this stage. The DL is sooooo much better than last year. Blake Mitchell is the starter as QB and he performed well in the last 5 games last year. He will be a good qb this year for us. As far as a backup ... apparently we are still searching. We are all hoping that Stephen Garcia will redshirt, so that he can get a better grasp on the Ole Ball Coaches offense. If the backups keep playing bad .. he may be 2nd string pretty quick.

Re: Gamecocks To Scrimmage Saturday Yes, I think Spurrier is doing everything that he can. Our offense should be very good this year as soon as the OL gets decent. We will be starting a lot of new guys ... at least 3 ... so it may take some time. He has developed our starting qb into a very capable qb. I would not say outstanding ... but he should be pretty good this year. The qb's behind him are sophomores and a frosh. He has not had a lot of time to mold those guys yet. Our RB's should be very good this year .. a senior and a junior that have both played a lot. WR ... we will have some new comers here that are blessed with size and speed. We recruited about 8 of them .. so if even half of them pan out, we should be loaded at WR. Defense looks really good this year. We may actually have a good DL, which we haven't in over 20 years. Our LB's core is very strong ... maybe the best in the SEC. The DB's will be much better for the simple fact that the DL will get after the qb and make their jobs easier. I still think we will win 9 games this year, maybe more.

Re: Gamecocks To Scrimmage Saturday Norwood is going to be scary this year. He looked very good again ... he could have had several sacks .. then again .. I believe he lined up on Gurminder .. so what does that say! McKinley had a couple passes thrown to him. He caught the first one for a td. He looked good.

Re: Gamecocks To Scrimmage Saturday thats good to hear. Norwood is a friend of mine, and former teammate. McKinnley played against me and ran track against me 4 years. Spurrier was very smart to recruit those two

Re: Gamecocks To Scrimmage Saturday Well you definitely will be a Gamecock fan this year! I think both are poised to have an excellent year. From what I hear, Norwood will be more of an every down player instead of just used on rushing situations. He is extremely quick off the ball and gets in the back field better than anyone on the team. I think he has a chance to be all SEC before this season is over. McKinley will take up where Rice left off. I think Kenny runs better routes and has better hands. He is probably quicker than Rice too. I look for him to have a monster season with him being the best option for Blake this year. He will definitely benefit from Sidney going pro early since he will be the feature WR. This is shaping up to be a very exciting year for the Cocks!
