Spurrier Rumors

Last week we had Steve Spurrier going to Miami. Today, we're hearing rumors that he's going to be the Next Alabama Head Coach

Spurrier denied the Miami rumors. Why so many Steve Spurrier rumors? Do you think he wants out or is he happy at SC?

Re: Spurrier Rumors

Spurrier himself seems to be in constant denial mode, but they say where there's smoke, there's fire. South Carolina seems to offer limited potential in terms of recruiting I think, and I believe the Ol' Ball Coach is starting to see the glass ceilling (sp?). Maybe that's why he's looking to go to a Miami or a Bama... he sees more potential to win and challenge for a BCS bowl bid?

Re: Spurrier Rumors

Coming from an Alabama graduate. I really don't think spurrier is coming. He has said he has no interest in the job and I really don't think any amount of money can move him. I think he stays at SC. I personally hope Bama goes after Paul Johnson.

Re: Spurrier Rumors

Johnson would be a fine choice, IMO, but from what I've read in the forums, not all Bama fans would agree.

Getting back to Spurrier, though, what's the deal with him? He keep publicly vowing to stay at SC, but these rumors persist... where there's smoke, there's fire they say.

Re: Spurrier Rumors

I would really like to see Spurrier go to Bama, I went to school with him in Johnson City, Tennessee, and we are proud of his accomplishments. I think he would do a great job at Bama, with the tradition they have, I think he will do OK at South Carolina and wish him best of luck.

Re: Spurrier Rumors

Sounds like all the Spurrier rumors may lead to a raise from the Gamecocks to try and keep him around.

Re: Spurrier Rumors

Correct you are, Empire. In fact, it's a done deal - Spurrier gets a contract extension and a $500k per year pay raise to stay at South Carolina.

Re: Spurrier Rumors

Sounds like the Spurrier rumors are dead for now. The latest speculation on Alabama's head coach is focused on Rich Rodriguez, Jim Grobe and a few others.

Both Rodriguez and Grobe have denied it, though. Bama's 0-for-3, it would seem.

The things some of you don't seem to understand about the "new Spurrier" is he has the challenge he wants at SC. He's done about everything one could do at UF and now he wants the challenge of doing it where people say it can't be done....at a place like USC. For a state the size of SC we have a lot of talented HS football players. Nowhere in numbers such as a Texas, Calif. or Florida, but he'll get his share in state and some from the Floridas, Alabamas, NCs, Tenn. etc. Give him 2 more years and the people such as the "sewer mouth" paul finebaum will be eating their words. It did my heart good to hear him have to report, "Spurrier turned Bama down....Rich Rod turned Bama down". Now, if they wait, which it looks like they might be considering for the NFL season to end, maybe they will get their #1 choice. Nick Saban! Now at $5 mill+/year, they'd be crazy.... but, that's never stopped them before....being crazy I mean.

Re: Spurrier Rumors

lol, last general news I heard was Bama's waiting til after Bowl's & NFL season to talk to any more candidates. At least the "official talk" will wait til then.

I think there's twice as many D1 prospects in SC as we've got here in TN. So I've got no doubt that SOS can get the Cocks into fightin shape within another few years.

Re: Spurrier Rumors

I really dont think Spurrier's leaving. I mean, we (USC) have got a lot of potential ahead of us; alot of young players who have developed greatly over the course of last year and, now with a year under their belts, should develop to be a good ball club. So in my opinion, if there is even a thought of leaving, i believe that he'll wait a few years to see what will happen.
