Might David Beckham be coming to America and joining the MLS? The AP is reporting it could happen within the next couple of years. Alexei Lalas is really said to be making a pitch for him in L.A. though New York is also on the shortlist. If indeed it does happen, this may well be the thing that finally helps soccer gain a foothold here in the U.S. and it certainly would be the biggest international player to come stateside since Pele.

Since Pele?...what about Franz Beckbauer coming over?...or Lothar Mathias later on?...Cryuff?...Gerd Mueller...but if you are jsut talking about rockstar appeal...then yeah...Beckham would be nice.

Who, who, who and who? Yeah... never heard of any of 'em. If people like me (non-soccer fans) know about a guy, and he comes to the states, then its a big deal. So, yeah, I guess that rockstar quality is what I'm getting at -- a name and a face to promote the game and bring it into the American consciousness. Say... wasn't Freddie Adu supposed to do that? What's up with him?

Beckbauer...you know...the "Kaiser"...the star midfielder and sweeper of the German national team of the late 70's ...Gerd "Das Bomber" Mueller the stocky goal scoring machine with over 1,000 lifetime goals and 14 World Cup goals for Germany...Johan Cryuff, three time European Footballer of the year and the leader of the Dutch "total soccer" comcept of the late 70's...that's who...big, big names...they jsut didn't marry a Spice girl...
