Shaun Alexander Will Cost the Seattle Seahawks Long After He's Gone

Everyone knows that running back Shaun Alexander is done with the Seattle Seahawks; the only question left is how, exactly, the team will get rid of him. The most likely answer: The Seahawks will cut him this month, but designate him as a post-June 1 cut for salary cap purposes.

Basically, that means the Seahawks get to spread out his cap hit, so that he'll cost $2.3 million this year and $4.6 million next year. In any event, the total cap hit for cutting Alexander this year will be $6.9 million, which is the remainder of the prorated $11.5 million signing bonus the team gave him two years ago.

And that shows just how stupid the Seahawks were to sign Alexander to an eight-year, $62 million contract in 2006 -- it was one of the worst contracts in NFL history. How could the Seahawks' front office have been so stupid to give so much money to a 29-year-old coming off a brutal 370-carry season? Did they really think he was going to be a solid contributor for long enough that he would even come close to being worth that $11.5 million signing bonus?

It's not Alexander's fault that he's old and will never be anything more than a three and a half yards a carry player. But it is the Seahawks' fault that he'll still account for $4.6 million on their salary cap in 2009, long after he's gone.

I look at it another way...the guy earned the money for many years...the payoff was jsut at the end...was he worth $11.5 mil signing bouns?...over the course of his career he was.

That was probably the only way they could have signed him when they did. They were banking on making a title run before he wore out. It seems like gambling on the future. Not the smartest move, but teams will do anything if they think they are really close to winning. It just didn't work out.

Hey we thought he would be a pretty consistant, so we signed him on a long deal. Did they make a mistake? Yeah, people make mistakes.

the seahawks definately chose the wrong guy to sign when they let hutchinson go and made a deal with alexander. Now that hutchinson is in minnesota they have one of the best running offenses. I dont think the problem for the seahawks is the running backs, its the interior offensive line. the seahawks slightly addressed this issue by signing wahle, but they need to do more in the draft

That's a good take on the situation...Hutchinson is certainly looking like the guy they needed to keep.

The good things he brought to the Seahawks make up for anything they suffer as a result of letting him go. Seattle is a beautiful town, and he may miss it, but I think he will be missed as well. When I was there someone yelled out the window when they saw the Alabama tag on the car, ROLL TIDE. Oh yeah, the fans remember what he has meant to the team and the city.
