Re: Mariners closer J.J. Putz

Is Seattle Mariners pitcher J.J. Putz one of the best closers in the American League? His pitching coach seems to think so. When he's out there, he can pitch against all the good ones," Rafael Chaves told the AP in a recent article. "He can pitch with all of them. He's at the top." Putz has converted 26 of 30 save chances and has a 2.11 ERA in 43 games since May 6. How good is this kid? Where would you rank him among AL closers?

Re: Mariners closer J.J. Putz

I'm not sure, Lefty Noob, but definitely behind Jonathan Papelbon and Mariano Rivera of the AL East.

It doesn't really mean that much that his pitching coach thinks he is the best of all-time because I wouldn't expect his pitching coach to say that he is the worst of all-time. In other words, he is obligated to hold an opinion but it isn't really worth anything in this case.

Cool Re: Mariners closer J.J. Putz

There's Rivera. Then theres' everybody else.....I haven't seen Putz pitch at all but his numbers are pretty scary: .88 WHIP, 82 K's in 62 innings....But I'd have to throw BJ Ryan in there also. He's pretty dominant.
