Seattle's Felix Hernandez became the first American League pitcher in nearly four decades to hit a grand slam yesterday, doing so against the Mets as the Mariners beat New York 5-2. According to the Associated Press, "The opposite-field shot to right-center was the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history, and the first slam by an AL hurler since Cleveland’s Steve Dunning went deep against Oakland’s Diego Segui on May 11, 1971, according to the Elias Sports Bureau."
Unfortunately for Hernandez, he was injured during the game and did not qualify for a win. He sprained his ankle a few innings later and had to leave the game. No word yet as to how long he will be out.
