Ichiro Suzuki Slump

What in the world is up with Ichiro so far this season? He played in the WBC, so he should be in excellent shape, but he's been just awful at the plate. Ichiro's 0 for his last 17 and is batting just .176 on the season thus far.

Yes, the season's still early, but this kind of abberation certainly jumps right out at you considering what a solid hitter he's been throughout his career - a lifetime .331 average and .816 OPS certainly attests to that. And as Mike Hargrove told reporters: "In '04 he had the same kind of start, and what did he get about 260 hits? We'll take that... Death, taxes and Ichiro getting base hits. Some things are a solid bet."

Maybe, but its still surprising to see him struggle so this early...

I know I'm surprised to see him hitting that low. I'm use to him easily hitting in the .330's. Amazing how he's been able to just slap hits and get on base. Im sure he'll get back on tract soon.

Ichiro is not known for a fast start... In April his average is 30 points lower than his lifetime avg.

April ain't over...Ichiro can string a few games together...The point is, he never gets out of the gate very fast.

Re: Ichiro Suzuki Slump

He could have a hangover from winning the World Baseball Classic. He is also not exactly a big fan of manager Mike Hargrove. It would not surprise me if he ends up elsewhere in the near future. He will hit, but everybody slows down. He turns 33 this year.

Scored a few runs, too. Now THAT'S the way to break an 0-for-18 slump!

Re: Ichiro Suzuki Slump

Ichiro is making a tremendous come-back from an early slump. He now bats a solid .320 and has gone for an average of .471 in last 17AB. Big turn around, eh?

I wonder what got him started up from where he left off in the 2004 season.

Basically I sent him an e-mail showing the impact his slump was having on my fantasy team...and how I won the title when he went over 260 hits...I need a repeat performance...

Re: Ichiro Suzuki Slump

He only got 260 hits in the 2004 season (when he broke the single-season record for most hits). On average he has about 230 hits a season. If our young Ichiro continues the season on pace he should finish up with 219 hits, and his .320 average.

Those aren't great numbers for him.

Marc, those are great numbers for anyone...219 would be his third highest total of his MLB career, and very few players every get that much ...still if you take into a account that he is not a first month hitter and project some of the numbers based on how he hits after the first months (in other words a weighed average, giving greater weight to the rest of the months, instead of a straight out calculation based on his average right now), my boy Ichiro would project higher...
