Re: Ichrio contract exstention

The Seattle leadoff man signed a $90 million, five-year contract extension Friday, three days after he was the unanimous MVP of the All-Star game. The deal ensures Seattle, enjoying its best season in four years, will not lose its franchise cornerstone to free agency this fall. Instead, the Mariners will keep the seven-time All-Star and perennial Gold Glove outfielder under contract until age 39.
Suzuki led the majors with 128 hits going into Friday night's game against Detroit. He was batting .355 with five home runs and 39 RBIs, and had stolen 23 bases.
"The one thing we have made clear since spring training was that it was our goal to have Ichiro play his entire career in Seattle, retire as a Mariner and go into the Hall of Fame in our cap," Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi said.
"While I don't believe this is Ichiro's final contract, I do think today's signing is a big step in assuring he will spend his entire career here in Seattle," he said. "He is both an offensive force, and a Gold Glove outfielder. It is great news for our organization and our fans that he will be here in Seattle for another five years."

Makes sense that they'd want to keep him. He really is the face of the Mariners.

1st ballot, my boy is...Easily the best contact hitter in the majors, great runner and a big arm in the outfield

Cool Re: Ichrio contract extension

It's funny. So many reports just said that Ichiro got a 5 year extension with the Mariners. They didn't even mention the 90 million bucks...A decade ago, that would have shocked most people. Now it's not even newsworthy,

I think he may be the best hitter I have seen, and I used to live for Pete Rose. The way he just gets the bat on the ball is amazing.

It is nice to see somebody finally stay loyal to the Mariners and stay.

I'd still put Tony Gwynn over him, but they're close. And yeah, the M's have been burned by so many free agents over the years. It is nice to see Ichiro decide to finish out his career in Seattle, unlike Junior, A-Rod or the Big Unit.

Can you imagine a Mariners All-time great team? For a franchise barely 30 years old they would have the Big Unit, Griffey, A-Rod, Ichiro all on the same team...it would be impressive for the modern era.

Heck, imagine if none of those players ever left, and instead of that being just an all-time team, it was actually their roster for the past 3-4 seasons? Man, wouldn't that have been something?

Yeah that would be...that is the saddest part of run away salaries...these guys would be locking up with a Titan of an A's team for best team in MLB.

Hmm, yeah... the A's would've had an unstoppable pitching staff, maybe the best 1-though-5 in MLB history.

Cool Re: Ichrio contract extension

George Brett is the best hitter I've ever seen.

It's funny. Maybe it's because Ichiro plays on the West Coast, I hardly ever see him play.
