So the Seattle Mariners are one of four teams currently pursuing Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, with the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox being the others? The sealed-bid process certainly has been kind to Seattle in the past; after all, that's how they landed Ichiro. With only Felix Hernandez and Jarrod Washburn under contract for 2007, the M's certainly could use a new starter. Think Matsuzaka will wind up with Seattle, or elsewhere?

It's now turned into half of baseball who are "linked" or "have interest" in pursuing Daisuke Matsuzaka. It will be fun to follow as far as who wins the bidding to get the right to negotiate and where the actual negotiations go (I think that's how it works with players from the Japanese leagues).

Is Matsuzaka the best pitcher in free-agency this year? Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt are other notables but none of them have stirred up so much talk here in New York/Antartica as this Japanese prospect.

From experience, Japanese players are always a gamble.
