Re: Griffey honored by Mariners fans

Ken Griffey Jr. has been named the Seattle Mariners "Hometown Hero" in a MLB promotion.

According to this story by MLB.com, "Griffey hasn't played for Seattle since 1999, but you can still find his name sprinkled throughout the team's record books... He is second in games [1,535], second in at-bats [5,832], second in runs [1,063], second in hits [1,742], second in RBIs [152] and first in home runs [398]."

He beat out Ichiro, Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner and Jamie Moyer for the honor.

Guess that goes to show you -- no matter what uniform he wears, Seattle fans still love Junior, eh?

He hasn't been as good with the Reds.

And by the way, he isn't "Junior" or "The Kid" anymore!

Re: Griffey honored by Mariners fans

I remember back in the early 1990s, there wasn't a better centerfielder in the game than Griffey in Seattle. He was just so good it was scary. His swing was stolen by every kid in America, lol, and from time to time when I have a bat in my hand his is the first I mimic.

Sadly injures fell upon him when he moved to Cincy. He's always been a class act though.

I would still draft him as my team's CF.

Johnny Damon doesn't toot my horn!

Re: Griffey honored by Mariners fans

I am primarily an Indians' fan, but I thoroughly admire the Mariners' organization and fans. The selection of Ken Griffely, Jr. is a real example of class, in my opinion. In most cities, many fans would have said, "good riddance" to a player who very publicly decided to depart, but not in Seattle. They are newer to Major League Baseball, but they have a much greater appreciation for the players who shined brightly for the Mariners and helped to put their franchise "on the map." Let's not kid ourselves. Almost no one took the Mariners seriously until Griffey and his teammates beat the Yankees in that incredible playoff in the mid-90's. For Mariners' fans, that was their "shining hour." What's more, their teams has been taken very seriously by all of their American League opponents from that time forward.

Re: Griffey honored by Mariners fans

Its a shame that the Mariners didn't win the World Series in 1995 with Griffey.

But the Indians were amazing in '95, chsbletz!
