| Re: Griffey honored by Mariners fans Ken Griffey Jr. has been named the Seattle Mariners "Hometown Hero" in a MLB promotion. According to this story by MLB.com, "Griffey hasn't played for Seattle since 1999, but you can still find his name sprinkled throughout the team's record books... He is second in games [1,535], second in at-bats [5,832], second in runs [1,063], second in hits [1,742], second in RBIs [152] and first in home runs [398]." He beat out Ichiro, Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner and Jamie Moyer for the honor. Guess that goes to show you -- no matter what uniform he wears, Seattle fans still love Junior, eh?

| Re: Griffey honored by Mariners fans I am primarily an Indians' fan, but I thoroughly admire the Mariners' organization and fans. The selection of Ken Griffely, Jr. is a real example of class, in my opinion. In most cities, many fans would have said, "good riddance" to a player who very publicly decided to depart, but not in Seattle. They are newer to Major League Baseball, but they have a much greater appreciation for the players who shined brightly for the Mariners and helped to put their franchise "on the map." Let's not kid ourselves. Almost no one took the Mariners seriously until Griffey and his teammates beat the Yankees in that incredible playoff in the mid-90's. For Mariners' fans, that was their "shining hour." What's more, their teams has been taken very seriously by all of their American League opponents from that time forward. |
