Mariners Add Chone Figgins The Associated Press reported Friday night that the Seattle Mariners and the 31-year-old switch-hitting Chone Figgins have agreed on a four-year, $36 million contract. The contract, pending a physical, also includes a vesting option for 2014 that would increase the deal to $45 million over five years.
Figgins batted .298 with a .395 on-base percentage, 42 stolen bases, 54 RBIs and an American League-leading 101 walks in 2009. In eight seasons in the big leagues -- all with the Angels -- he has hit .291 with a .363 on-base percentage and 280 steals.
With Jack Wilson and Jose Lopez covering the middle infield, it's probably that Figgins will play the hot corner. Especially since Adrian Beltre is currently a Type-B Free Agent. However, should Beltre accept arbitration, Figgins could move to left field or even to second base -- thus moving Lopez to first perhaps.
Either way, the combination of Ichiro and Figgins at the top of the order is a dangerous one.
In other Mariners news, they are still rumored to be pursuing Jason Bay, Rich Harden, and John Lackey.
