| Re: Mariners run into triple play ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Seattle Mariners had two runners thrown out trying to advance as part of a first-inning triple play against Tampa Bay on Saturday night.
Seattle had Jose Lopez on third and Adrian Beltre on first when Raul Ibanez struck out on a 3-2 pitch for the first out.
Beltre broke for second on the play, and stopped before reaching the base when catcher Dioner Navarro's throw easily beat him to the bag. Shortstop Ben Zobrist caught Navarro's throw and after a few steps tagged out Beltre as he headed back toward first.
Zobrist then threw home in time for Navarro to tag out Lopez for the third out of the inning.
Seattle has been on the wrong side of a triple play nine times in team history, including twice this season. The other triple play this year occurred May 27 against Minnesota.
The Devil Rays have turned two triple plays in franchise history. They also accomplished the feat Sept. 13, 2002, at Toronto.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there have been four triple plays this season, the previous one coming when the Kansas City Royals turned it against Tampa Bay on June 11. I think triple plays, like no hitters are the rarest of major league feats...Anyone seen one live?...I have a freind at work who got to see Nolan Ryan no hit the Tigers back in the 70's...it was his first live game...as a kid he wanted homers and was bored to death...
