Barry Bonds Threatens To Sue Over False Statements

Now that Barry Bonds has passed Henry Aaron to become baseball's all-time home run king, he's threatening to sue anyone who makes false or misleading statements about him, two Bay Area attorneys said Monday.

Attorneys John Burris of Oakland and Todd Schneider of San Francisco said Bonds has retained them "in connection with legal issues arising from the myriad of false statements attributed to him by players, the media and others."

The attorneys, who are veteran civil rights litigators, said they believe "such statements are defamatory and have legal consequences."

They said they "want the public to know that Barry's silence in the face of the accusations should not be construed as an admission of any kind."

In fact, Burris and Schneider said Bonds retained them "because of the false nature of these statements."

As much as I don't like him, at least he is finally making a statement of some type. He know this would take away from his quest, so it is a bit calculated that he did it now.

Can't blame him, I would try it! What does he have to lose??

Wouldn't it suck for those of us who think he is guilty as hell if he could prove his innocence!

Phils, he can't prove any innocence on the steroid issue. MLB did no testing from 1999-2004 (the period in which it's assumed and believed Bonds did steroids/HGH).

Same with all his peers and every player before then. The 1990s and early 2000s are the Steroid Era in MLB and future generations will think of everyone as steroid guys.

Very true, the late hours may be catching up with me!!! I'm sure not hopeful for it, but he must be even more arrogant than I thought to bring attention to the issue in this manner. Should be interesting to see how this works out.

Who's the burden of proof on in these cases? I'd think Bonds wouldn't have to prove he was innocent; the others would have prove the statements they made were true. I'm not 100% sure but that would be my guess.
