| Re: Barry Bonds home run watch Ruth gets the nod. However, Mays was fast, he stole bases, got on base and hit many homeruns, and was mostly known for his defense. He is still arguably the best defensive player ever. |

| Re: Barry Bonds home run watch Hey, how many rings does Bonds have? And yes, before you look at my title and scramble for the 'post quick reply' I know I'm taking a page from anti-Marino-for-greatest-QB camp. I would never argue than Dan was the best. He was great, but not the quintessential on-field general that determines the distinction. Much like how Bonds falls short, no matter which stats he puts up. |

| Re: Barry Bonds home run watch Bonds hit his first home run since May 8th yesterday, knocking career dinger #746 in a loss to the Colorado Rockies. He's now nine away from Aaron's record. Closer and closer he creeps... baseball better figure out what they're gonna do pretty quick.

| Re: Barry Bonds home run watch Bonds added Fenway Park to his hitlist today, hitting his first career home run out of the Boston ballpark (748th overall) in the Giants 9-5 loss to the Sox today. He's now seven away from tying Aaron's record. "I thought it was a popup, and I turned around and saw J.D. (Drew) just keep going back, further and further and further," Tim Wakefield, the 441st pitcher to surrender a dinger to Barry, told reporters afterwards. "He put a good swing on it, and I'm sure he's put a lot of swings on a lot of other pitchers." Yeah, I think that's safe to say. At least 441 of them, I'd guess. |

| Re: Barry Bonds home run watch I am amazed he ever gets a pitch to hit with that ridiculously poor line up he is. Omar Visquel is the next best hitter on that team. Rich Aurelia, who was washed up five years ago, bats fifth, and yesterday, slap hitter Randy Winn was hitting in the third spot. I would not want to be a Giants' pitcher, depending on these guys to score runs for me.

| Re: Barry Bonds home run watch One must remember that with the MVP Award back in Ruth's day, until 1930, for some ridiculous reason, if you had won it previously, you were not eligible to win it again. This means that Ruth could have conceivably won it, as he should have, for most of the 1920s, instead of just for 1923, which was one of his lesser seasons. Looking back at his numbers, you could argue that he should have won ten of these. His margin of homers is just plain silly-in 1921 for instance, Ruth hit 59, the next highest total was 24. Add to the fact that he would have been a Hall of Famer as a pitcher had he stayed on the mound, and there is no argument at all who the greatest of all-time is. None. |

| Re: Barry Bonds home run watch Barry is now just five home runs away after hitting #750 in yesterday's loss to Arizona. According to the AP, "The 42-year-old Bonds led off the eighth inning with a solo shot off D-backs starter Livan Hernandez to tie the game at 3... Bonds drove a 3-2 pitch an estimated 380 feet for his 16th home run of the season and first in exactly a week since connecting off Yankees reliever Scott Proctor on June 22. It was Bonds' first homer in 14 at-bats and 23 plate appearances -- and the fourth of his career against former Giant Hernandez, who last surrendered a home run to Bonds on Aug. 24, 2006. It was Bonds' 39th against Arizona." |
