CF Randy Winn Signs Extension

31-year-old switch-hitter Randy Winn has agreed to terms on a new 3-year contract extension worth more than $23 million. Winn, who is slated to start in center for the Giants this season, hit .359 with 14 home runs after joining San Fran right before the trading deadline last season.

"He's a leadoff hitter with a lot of dimensions," Giants GM Brian Sabean told the Associated Press today. "We signed him longterm because of the type of player he is. A center fielder with run-producing potential is a rarity. The fans warmed up to him. There's a lot to like about Randy Winn."

Good signing for SF, or too much to pay for a career .288 hitter?

Re: CF Randy Winn Signs Extension

I'm a Mariners fan and remember when the M's picked up Randy Winn. He's a good switch hitter, and seems to hit better from the leadoff spot than number two, or anywhere else. However, we have Ichiro up here and he seemed to play a little better.

Winn is a switch hitter, like you mentioned and he also has decent speed, a good glove, decent power and can hit for average. You talk about five-star players and you think of those who excell in those categories, taking them to the max. Winn, though, is a five-star player, even if he doesn't lead in all those categories. $23 million for 3 years isn't that bad. Especially if you consider what the Pittsburgh Pirates just paid Jack Wilson.
