On Tuesday, Mike Singletary dismissed his pupils for summer vacation. But not before handing out a gold star for the term to quarterback Alex Smith.
Smith started the spring semester as one of the team's biggest question marks. He had never worked directly under Singletary and had plenty to prove. But he ended the final days of practice in a virtual dead heat with Shaun Hill for the starting quarterback job, which will be decided this summer in training camp.
"The playing field is level now," Singletary said.

Sooo, does this mean Smith has gotten that much better, or has Hill gotten that much worse?

I'll tell you what I think. Every year they say Alex is looking better, he is gonna be really good and it never happens. Why is this year any different? There are practice players and game players and Alex is a practice player. Shaun is a game player and should get the nod to become starting QB come the beginning of the regular season in 2009.

I would not like to see Smith out there playing right now, he hasn't done enough in game situations.

i dont think either is a very good choice ..... why didnt they pick up Jeff Garcia when they had the chance ?
