Re: 49ers leaving San Francisco?

As you can see from the article above, there is a possibility that the 49ers could relocate to Santa Clara, California, should the proposed stadium in the city of San Francisco fail for any reason. "If for whatever reason things don't work out in San Francisco, we need to have a backup," vice-president of communications Lisa Lang told the AP earlier this week. Thoughts?

Leverage...that's all...who wants to follow the Santa Clara 49ers or the Califorina 49ers?...then again the Dodgers and the Giants were forever to stay in New York...

They'll borrow a page from the Angels and be the San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara.

It'll never really happen; I think they're just trying to use it for leverage.

The San Antonio 49ers would have a better ring to it...

Re: Is the 49ers' move to Santa Clara realistic?

Another good article about the Niners possible move to Santa Clara. In the above story, the author says: "Last week, the San Francisco 49ers announced that they would consider moving to Santa Clara if plans for a new stadium fall through. C'mon! The 49ers aren't going anywhere. Despite the rants offered up by 49ers brass, moving to Santa Clara is just not a realistic scenario. Forget the fact that the team already has a six-year plan for their new stadium in San Francisco. The reality is that Santa Clara is not getting an NFL stadium. You know that. I know that. The entire world more or less knows that."

So if this bargaining ploy is so obviously just a ploy, is there any chance it possibly works?

Re: 49ers leaving San Francisco?

Not in my wildest dreams could I see the Niners leaving SF! If they could put together a couple of wining seasons, the new stadium would be a moot point and a move wouldn't happen.

Santa Clara 49ers

Well it looks like the 49ers are serious about leaving San Fran. They've broken off talks with the city for a replacement stadium at Candlestick, next door to their current home at Monster Park.

49ers owner John York told SanFrancisco Mayor Gavin Newsom that a year long study thinks that the replacement stadium just isn't feasable. So they now plan to move to a new stadium in Santa Clara. It would be next to the team's offices and practice field complex. The target date for completion is 2012.

Part of the problem for the city is that San Fran wanted to put in a bid for the 2016 Olympics with the new stadium being a key point in their pitch.

So who thinks this is a done deal? Or just more posturing?

Will it really be the Santa Clara 49ers in a few years?

Re: Santa Clara 49ers

It's a done deal, at least according to ESPN. The name of the team will not change, though.

Re: 49ers leaving San Francisco?

They'll be the San Francisco 49ers or they'll be the Santa Clara 49ers?

Re: 49ers leaving San Francisco?

The San Francisco 49ers. Unless they decide to pull something like baseball's Angels and become the San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara.
