As this article correctly points out, Trent Dilfer is the only backup QB in the league this season with a Super Bowl win under his belt. Furthermore, as author Eric Krupka writes, "Dilfer is a crafty veteran that still has a lot left in the tank. And more than that, he has an incredible amount of knowledge and experience... Smith would be prudent to draw upon Dilfer's vast amount of knowledge of the game."

This reminds me of the discussions we had about Vinnie possibly going to the Browns. Granted, Dilfer is more game ready, but... how important is it for a team with a young starting QB to have a veteran onboard to coach him up?

Dilfer is an ideal backup and while never lived up to his promise can make a plentiful contribution by being Alex Smith's mentor. I had Dilfer last year in fantasy football and he was a steal. Good article...I agree.

Has anyone ever heard Dilfer in the broadcast booth or on the radio? He's great. Maybe he should just hang it up, and start his broadcasting career.

Older QB's don't die...they jsut fade to the booth?...I followed him in Tampa Bay...and was never impressed by him

The Niners are set on having Alex Smith as their QB. He needs someone to lean on, to learn from. Guarenteed he didn't have that last year! I just don't know!
