Smith still has promising future

Alex Smith is just 24, has a strong arm but not always accurate, and has a good head on his shoulders.
When he was drafted, his college coach at Utah, Urban Meyer, said it would take awhile for Alex to learn the NFL way of doing things.
This is his 4th offensive co-ordinator in three years.
The starting quarterback this year, J.T. O'Sullivan, came into camp having learned Mike Martz's offensive system in Detroit.
Smith's first start as a rookie against the Colts with one of best defenses in the league resulted in 4 interceptions and a fumble. Welcome to the NFL kid.
His separated shoulder created more problems. Nolan tried to downplay it. Smith violated the No. 1 rule (dont talk to reporters) in the locker room when he said his shoulder was killing him.
Its too early to call him a bust. He still has a promising future ahead of him.
Just not in San Francisco.

ESPN - 'Bust' label is too strong for 49ers' Smith - NFL

Do you think this young player could make it else where and Where?

I wonder if any teams are expressing interest in Smith?

Why do you say that?
Not disagreeing or agreeing, just wondering why.

First reason is that the guy has no accuracy not good for a Q.B,second is his mechanics he throws of his back foot does not get his feet planted, and does not release at the right time, last but not lease is pocket presence don't have it,he'll never be a pocket passer."just my 2 cents"

But those can be fixed. If he learns to get his feet planted, most of the rest will get better. Not sure about the pocket presence though. I dont know if that can be learned or if a player can be made more aware.

Your right than can be fixed and niners organization thought so too when they drafted the kid they looked how smart this kid was and said he could be thought after 3 yrs he still has the same proplem, this is his 4th season and was beat out by JTO, what does that tell you? "just my 2 cents"

Not really Bette. I see Alex Smith as a career backup or a starter like Trent Dilfer was. The kind of QB who throws 15 times a game on team with a bruising running game like the Giants or Jaguars. I'm more interested in seeing this O'Sullivan guy in regular season play.

But this is his 3rd offensive coordinator in three years. Dont you think that may have an effect?

He was beat by JTO because at this time JTO was better.

Again, not agreeing or disagreeing.

I wasnt really asking just Dusty. More like anyone that has an answer. I think you are right about the sixth sense thing.
And what you say after 4 coordinators, maybe it is Alex. I'm still not totally convinced one way or the other but your thinking is sound.

Well I agree pretty much with Ninerfan anyway. If this kid is gonna make something of himself as a quarterback it won't be with the Niners the same way Matt Leinhart will never be a good quarterback with the Cardinals. Perhaps if they had a guy like Mike Shanahan as coach but alas...they don't. Just a bad fit for the franchise in both cases as it turned out.
