Re: Johnson - Lelie - Stallworth trade rumors

Can't remember the last time I saw a 3-team deal in the NFL, but here's one that makes sense. According to this story, rmors has it that the San Francisco 49ers might send TE Eric Johnson to the Denver Broncos, the Broncos would deal WR Ashley Lelie to the New Orleans Saints, and the Saints would trade WR Donte Stallworth to the 49ers. What do you guys think about this possible three-team trade involving the Niners?

Not bad. The 49ers are better off with a top flight WR. Denver needs to get ride of Lelie...Lelie can be happy opposite Joe Horn in New Orleans..its a cool deal.

True, but would the 49ers be better off with Stallworth or Lelie?

I think they are basically the same player at this stage...Lelie has more upside, but more attitude...they will put up similar numbers is my guess. I am a gambler who would want the higher ceiling Lelie.

Cool Re: Johnson - Lelie - Stallworth trade rumors

I was wondering if the Saints wouldn't be better off just keeping Stallworth. He had a very good year last year. I don't see what the benefit is to the Saints.

The more changed the merrier?...True...Lelie is an unknown talent at this point in time...and Donte was okay for them...not sure why the move was made for them...but if Lelie lives up to potential, he can be a bit better player.

Re: Johnson - Lelie - Stallworth trade rumors

For some reason, Payton doesn't like him. Don't know if it's an effort issue, hands, route running or what.

Re: Niners unlikely to trade TE Johnson

Well, this writer seems to think that the Niners won't part with Johnson: "How can one sit and truly believe the 49ers don't need him? His peak value is as a member of the Niners. Everyone is ready to ship him off because of the No. 6 overall selection in last April's draft, tight end Vernon Davis. While Davis could be a special player, he has yet to step on the field of play in the NFL. He still has plenty to prove before the organization starts making personnel decisions to suit him."

I guess it all depends what you get for him. If its Lelie or Stallworth, why not pull the trigger...?

Re: Niners unlikely to trade TE Johnson

Davis, Stallworth and Bryant to catch the ball for the Niners sounds great. Unfortunately theres only one ball to go around and a rookie coming off a horrendous season last year to throw it. Its risky. You have either the components for an explosive offense...or just an outright explosion! I would keep Johnson and avoid that type of risk, not worth it.

Cool Re: Johnson - Lelie - Stallworth trade rumors

How many tight ends to the Niners need? Stallworth would be a great upgrade for them and stretch the field. I think it's a no brainer for the 49ers. I just didn't understand it from the Saints point of view but Gotham explained it - Payton doesn't like Stallworth for some reason.
