The San Francisco 49ers have signed LB Takeo Spikes and cut former starter Brandon Moore.

According to the Associated Press, "Spikes spent 10 seasons with the Bengals, Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles. His season with the Eagles last year ended with a torn rotator cuff in the 14th game. He finished with 85 tackles, including 63 solo stops, and one sack... Moore started 10 games in 2005 and 11 in 2006, when he led the team in tackles with 114 and sacks with 6 1/2 . He lost his starting job last year." Spikes is expected to start alongside Patrick Willis in the team's 3-4 defense. Good move?

Of course it's a good move. He doesn't have the same burst or sideline to sideline ability he used to. Great thing is he doesn't have to be that guy in this system. Willis is that guy. Spikes is still an excellent run stopper, much better then Ulbrich or Moore(Moore was released). Now the niners have the two thickest necks in the league playing MLB, look it up. lol This was a great move because it makes their run D stronger. I think he helps out this year in big games that might have cost them a playoff entry. Buffalo, NYJets, Washington and St. Louis I would have considered tougher games without spikes because of their ability to run the middle. Arizona also, although I still think they go 1-1 against the Cards. Spikes also helps out Lawson, giving him a chance to blitz, cover or just do a little more as Spikes will get more attention then Ulbrich would have. Spikes will be huge against the Cowboys, although I think the niners still don't have a chance, but at least Barber will have a much tougher time finding an empty gap up the middle. At least that's how I see it.

Excellent move. I think Takeo would have been one of the elite of the elite in the NFL if he didn't get hurt as much as he did. This is a great move by the 49ers. He brings a very physical presence to the 49ers and more expereince to the team. I want to see him do well. I don't wan to see him get gurt again...

I agree. At one time, Spikes was being discussed in the same breath as Ray Lewis. He was never quite as good, but he was good. Definitely, as you both point out, injuries have taken their toll. Spikes is a notoriously hard worker, though, and deep down I'm hoping that he's able to get himself back to being a possible Pro Bowl level player.

Our D is strong. Tekeo and Willis will be good combo. BUT WE NEED QB!!!!!!!! I remember the day when we were unstopable on both sides of the ball.

It is a good move but I still think the 49ers big hole is their special teams. Well of course a QB maybe too.
