Re: High expectations for Alex Smith

This poses an interesting question - what kind of QB should San Francisco 49ers fans expect Alex Smith to be, both now and in the future? Sure, he had a pretty rough rookie year last year and he's got a lot ot learn. But he was a #1 overall draft pick. Ultimately, you expect him to deliver the goods, and has this article points out, "the progress Smith makes this season will tell us a lot about the kind of player he may or may not become."

So, what kind of future does this kid have? Can he live up to the legacy of past Niners quarterbacks?

Smith is a bright QB, but a West Coast offense takes a good five years to master...I expect him to make strides...but he will not be a Pro Bowler anytime soon...

Re: High expectations for Alex Smith

In today's NFL, will the team be patient enough to wait five years on him to develop? I kinda doubt it.

There in lies the problem...same thing with Joey Harrington at Detroit...experts say ti takes 5 years to master...but no team wants to wait that long.

Heck, Ben Rothlesberger didn't need five years. Just listen to the media... they'll tell you what a perfectly polished QB he is already after just two seasons. Never mind the Super Bowl. He's the MAN! And unfortunately, that false image of fresh out of college perfection will now be what every team expects their QB to achieve within 2-3 seasons. Clock's ticking, Mister Smith.

Yeah...we all know though that Big Ben is the exception rather than the rule...as was Peyton Manning and Tom Brady...but I never understand having such a short lease on a first round pick
