Fans of the San Francisco 49ers wonder what happened to the quarterback they thought they were getting.The 49ers are coming off a disappointing 5-11 season. There are a lot of questions surrounding the 49ers, and Alex Smith is one of them.
Alex Smith has struggled every year since coming to the team. Its not fair, though, to blame all of his struggles on him. He was on his 3rd offensive system in as many years and now he faces his 4th, which is the most complex of all.
This is a do or die year for Smith. He deserves one more chance.

Alex graduated with a 3.71 GPA. He will need all of his smarts to learn Mike Martz's system.

I have to respectfully disagree. Either he's not ready yet or he's a bust. In any case now Smith has to win the job over the very good Shaun Hill. If he was worth the #1 pick then he should have no problem but it's not gonna happen. I said before that I love that Nolan is tossing out who was drafted when and who makes the most money contractually and allowing the quarterbacks to compete for the starting job on the premise of who will give the Niners the best chance to win.

IMO Alex Smith needs to step up this year. Excuses are like...you know...I'm tired of hearing all the excuses. If Smith can't turn it around this year, with Martz and all the weapons he has around him, then I'm dropping the bust card. Yessir. And another thing, Vernon Davis? I don't think it's to early to start asking the most tallented, highest potential TE to enter the league ever to break through with at least 800+ yards and 6 TDs.

It might sound like I'm bagging on these two guys, I'm not. I expect them to step up and meet this challenge.

I think you hit the nail right on the head.
The only thing I differ with is because its a new system and its Mike Martz, it will take time for things to really really click. But there should be a very big improvement. The 49ers should start looking more like the team fans expect them to be.

As you can tell I'm not asking for a pro-bowl season from anybody here. I'm asking to not look like a bust. I want to see QB with 20+ TDs, I don't care if he needs 20 INTs to get there. Then I want to see a sub pro-bowl year from Vernon Davis, just to show he can improve more then just a step.

To analyze a little bit, I'm not sure Davis has what it takes. He's got great great greaet tools, but when I saw him pre-draft at the combine and in the one game I saw he had some drops that scared me. Balls were bouncing out of his hands. I saw at least two of those last season. So I'm just worried Davis has hard hands. I hope he can get past that and prove me wrong. But he doesn't just drop passes, they explode out of his steel hands. Can somebody tell me if they've seen the same thing or not?

Niners are a mess but if they play hard they can get to 8-8 maybe 9-7 if they get a few breaks and get the San Francisco 49ers ship pointed in the right direction.

Disappointing to say the least and the shame is,that there going to let him fight for the job. All that smarts wont help with Martz, if you asked every player on that line from oneside to the other would they want to go to battle with Smith and belive that he can take them to a Super Bowl because in the end thats where every team is trying to be i'll bet there would be mixed feelings,that for one is a reason to get him out of there and about the targets he has around him if they don't belive in him they will drop the ball specially if he's hangin them out to dry like when got hurt in the pittsburg game "V.D" but really how good can a tight end be with a under par Q.B.for that matter any offense weapon please football gods get rid of ALEX SMITH!!!!!Shaun Hill came in with the same offense and won 2 games and he did it with the same weapons,did anybody see Vernon Davis's T.D catch in that cincy game in between 3 defenders from 20 yds.out? from Hill it's about timeing and Smith does not have it oh ya but Smith is a scrambler and Hill is not...look in that same game and you'll see that Hill bootlegs from 5 yards out and gets the T.D. himself each of his 2 starts he post over a 100% passer rating bottom line "WE PLAY TO WIN THE GAME" so start the guy that gives u the best chance to win. Don't get me wrong ladies and gents i'm a ninerfan tell i die just aint happy with still giving this HEARTBREAK KID another shot sorry if this offends any one but Alex Smith,great post Bette
