49ers draft Kentwan Balmer

With the 29th pick in the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have drafted Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina. Good pick?

I'll answer my own question. No, it's not. You needed to get Mike Martz some weapons to work with on offense, guys!
The Niners had their pick of any of the top wideout on the board. Why not snag one of them?

Re: 49ers draft Kentwan Balmer

I think it's a great pick. none of the WR's were 1st round tallent. Balmer was the best player on the board, and besides that DLine with balmer's size and skills are a PERFECT and UNDERRATED fit in the 3-4 D that Nolan loves. Balmer will start and make an impact. You have to have two of your DL that can collect double teams so your linebackers blitz free without a blocker. Would have been a much much better pick if they would have drafted a WR in the second round...Rachal though? That was a bad pick IMO.

Yeah, I don't mean to knock Balmer... he's a good athlete and the pick sorta makes sense. But the Niners had the worst offense in the league last year. You'd think, considering they had their choice of playmaker at the wideout position, they would've gone that route. That's why I don't like this pick.

I guess they figured talent wise that Balmer was better than any of the wideouts on the board at the time. The defensive line is a need for them.

alot of others teams passed on those wide out's that must mean something and balmer was a area of need and also a steal on all draft boards they had him higher than the 29th pick plus we had Hostler as a cordinatior last year and we have some wideout's and added them this year Bruce,Lilie,Johnson,Battle,Hill, which had the fastest time at the compine last year "Hill",and Davis i would like to see him moved out a little bit this year and Bajema kind handle some blocking duties.but what do i know "just my 2 cents"but we'll be a better offense just by adding Martz.

Well, I'm going to defer to the Niners fans on this one.
All other things aside, Balmer is a talented player, so he should work out well in San Fran.

Re: 49ers draft Kentwan Balmer

I think Balmer was one hell of a good pick! I've considered the niners line to be crappy for some time now. Especially for a 3-4 team, the linemen they had were not well suited for this style of D. Now I can shut my mouth when I talk crap about my friends 49er team because with Justin Smith, Balmer and Sopoaga or Franklin can play NT, that line is all of the sudden good now...at least on paper.

Re: 49ers draft Kentwan Balmer

I'm surprised the Niners passed on Brohm in the second round. Are they that sold on Shaun Hill? I like them solidifying the offensive and defensive lines but they need some playmakers and bad. Perhaps they would make a good team for Chad Johnson to be traded to. A Niners '09 draft pick would make fine compensation.
