San Fran was second last in rushing attempts, the only team with fewer was Detroit, with Mike Martz as offensive coordinator.
So theres the possibility with Martz now the 49ers offensive coordinator that they will run less because Martz doesnt like the run game.

And all this gets back to what I was saying a while ago, about Martz and Frank Gore being a bad fit. I got shelled pretty good for those comments, but here you go -- Martz has a workhorse back and he there's a good shot he'll want to start using him less. Bad move. The offense should be going through Gore, not around him.

i for one hope not,but that average is mostly smith and dilfer now the 2 starts hill had he posted 100.1 pas rating and 5 t.d's and 1int,i understand what the article is saying but there is still going to be comp at that q.b spot and a good passing attack"with hill"will open up that run,and in detroit they did not have a r.b like gore and if anybody had roy willams on one side and calvin johson on the other they'd probly would not hand off to a r.b. ethier.will see were the chips fall thanks for the post it's nice to see a post good r bad.

You make some good points here. But going back to what Lefty said, Martz just probably isnt going to use Gore. He is going to pass first (also second and third) So if they arent going to use the run, then opponents will just key in on the pass. Do you think Martz will change his style and use Gore? Is there any chance he will make Gore the center of the offense?
Of course, a lot depends on how that qb competition turns out.
But what a waste if they dont use Gore.

first off i think he will use gore and he'll become the staple but who knows? i know that gore is not faulk but when faulk was there he was a staple of the greatest show on turf having to worry about that guy out of the backfield caused alot of blown coverages and wideout had great game's so that caused ripple effect double coverages on wideouts,and then faulk had his great season's,which over the last 3yrs. the oppising deffense's tee off on gore and they stop niners offense which sometimes took 8to9 men in the box and sometimes that still did not work not worried at all about the passing game "smith sucks"maybe now they have something to worry about "hill" and gore will get some daylight?i would like to think of martz as a smart man,and know who the playmakers on the team and know how to use them? but will see

Gore is the best offensive player they have. What they should do is really build the offense around his talents. It seems that they are drafting some new offensive linemen so if the Niners develop a power running game to hide Alex Smith's inadequacies they could be a contender and then perhaps Smith could learn something or they could think about a replacement. Defensively the Niners have some good players like rookie Patrick Willis who nobody probably knows about. I think the power running game route is their best bet to get out of their losing ways.
