49er's jersey No. 80 is safe

Put down the torches, folks. No reason to form an angry mob outside 4949 Centennial Blvd.
Isaac Bruce won't be wearing No. 80.
The 49ers are usually tone-deaf when it comes to the franchise legacy, but they made sure to put this percolating issue to rest.
Jersey numbers will be assigned during next week's "Organized Team Activity." And no sacrilege will take place when the uniforms are handed out. There will be no blasphemous conduct when Bruce gets dressed for his first practice.
"Isaac Bruce will not be wearing No. 80," team spokesman Aaron Salkin said. "We are leaving it in honor of Jerry Rice's legacy."

I'm glad that issue is resolved. Sounds like folks might have been a little upset if the 49ers are actually doing something about it. Although the jersey hasnt been retired yet.

No it wasnt confirmed. It was just up for discussion because they both wear 80. Jerry Rice said he did care, it was ok.
Kind of guess that the fans didnt like it. At least thats my take on it.

Was the number retired? I thought it was. If so, then I wouldn't want another player to wear it either.

Bruce can, and it seems, will, just be happy with another number!

Because. Thats how we know if its a Super Bowl or a player. Some people are easily confused, ok?

That could be it. But for all we know, Bruce never even asked for it. It might've just been the media stirring that stuff up.

Of course it makes sense.
Its not retired because the 49ers organization is a little slow about these things I guess.

Re: 49er's jersey No. 80 is safe

I'm glad #80 is safe. Jerry Rice is the most dominant player in the history of the NFL to which I can attest as his touchdown catch kept the Giants out of the playoffs in '88!

Re: 49er's jersey No. 80 is safe

According to Wikipedia, his number is retired:

Retired numbers
8 - Steve Young
12 - John Brodie*
16 - Joe Montana
34 - Joe Perry
37 - Jimmy Johnson
39 - Hugh McElhenny
42 - Ronnie Lott
70 - Charlie Krueger
73 - Leo Nomellini
79 - Bob St. Clair
80 - Jerry Rice
87 - Dwight Clark
BW - Bill Walsh**

Seeing as how Trent Dilfer wore #12, though, I wonder just how "retired" these numbers are.
