49'ers staff new, now who is quarterback?

Now that the 49er's have their quarterback coach, Ted Tollner, and offensive coordinator, Mike Martz, in place, they just have to figure out who is going to be the quarterback for the upcoming season. Will it be Alex Smith or the pending free agent Shaun Hill, who the 49ers would like to resign.
If healthy, Smith seems better suited for Martz's "let it fly offense."

49ers News: Alex Smith Revived by New Staff - Bleacher Report

This was the league's worse offense last season. Who do you think is best choice for quarterback?

I still think it'll be Smith, but he'll be on a extremely short leash.

If this news (2/4/08) is any indication of things to come, then Alex Smith's days as a Niner might be numbered!!!

Niners, Shaun Hill agree to three-year contract

To be honest, I really liked what I saw from Hill when he played last season. And no, that's not because he's the backup QB that everyone wants to see in the game because the starter stinks... he really looked pretty good running the offense!

So did I, I think he can do just as good if not better than Smith, let um battle it out in camp.

Actually, they wanted to resign him, but this is not an indication he will start. Dont forget that in the first post it said that Smith would be more suited to Martz's style of offense. Martz could make a diff. At any rate, they will be fighting for the no. 1 spot.

actually, smith is not suited with what Martz does,he will have to tear him down and teach him how to throw all over again "throw's of his backfoot"mess's up his accruacy, and as far as q.b.martz has had none of them is like smith, bulgar no,warner no,kitna no,if any hill look's more like bulgar,"just my 2 cent's" but comp can only better the situiation good luck alex

Re: 49'ers staff new, now who is quarterback?

The biggest problem with players like Smith who were drafted very high and paid a lot of money is many times, there's no in-team competition to bring out the best in these athletes.

I truly believe that Tom Brady may not have gotten as good as he did as quickly if he weren't battling it out with Drew Bledsoe when Bledsoe was the starter for New England. That competition put an insecurity in the player knowing that he really has to earn his spot and (take it from me) that feeling goes with you the rest of your career! An insecure player is a GOOD player!

Alex Smith has had NO competition since day one and that is just NOT GOOD! Look at Joe Montana and Steve Young. Don't you think the presence of one didn't push the other? As long as Smith has no one to look over his shoulder at, the only fear he has is of injury! This, sadly, does nothing for his improvement! Maybe now, with Hill being given an equal shot to run the offense and vie for the starting spot, it'll bring out something in Smith that we've all been missing! As a fan of both the Niners and Alex Smith, I can only hope it does!

Unfortunately I havent watched the 49ers this season so all I know is what I read and what the fans tell me.
The article said Smith was suited to Martz's offense because it requires good accuracy on intermediate and deep throws but it doesnt sound like you agree with that.
Hill did say that he thought his style was a lot like Bulger's.
Smith's basics need a lot of work, and he is going to need a thick skin if he's going to work with Martz.
