| Too many good players at one position? An embarrassment of riches? Please, you'll make the San Francisco 49ers blush. As they look to improve from a 4-12 record and build on consecutive season-ending victories, they know they need to get their best people on the field. Some of what they do, coach Mike Nolan says, will be predicated on that principle. It could quickly apply at tight end, where the 49ers spent the sixth overall choice on Vernon Davis. They also get Eric Johnson back after he missed all of 2005 with a foot injury. Johnson set a club record at his position with 82 receptions the previous season. One? The other? Both, and then some, Nolan said. "Like I said when we drafted (Davis), we're going to get our best five eligible guys on the field. If that means two tight ends, if that means three tight ends or one tight end, they'll complement each other from the standpoint of looking at them on the field. You can put the wide receivers and even the running backs in that category," Nolan said. "To say that one tight end on offense is competing with another, maybe for the one-tight-end package, but to get our best 11 on the field, maybe not." Is this a smart thing?...can the 49ers do well in a two TE set?...should they trade Eric?...should they have spent the 6th pick on a TE? Last edited by Gotham Dark Knight : 05-10-2006 at 08:05 AM. |
