Alex Smith confirmed Sunday that he'll undergo season-ending shoulder surgery as soon as next week.
Smith is expected to face three months of rehab, so he should be ready for training camp. But the surgery could sap some of Smith's already modest arm strength. He seems likely to go on injured reserve this week. With Trent Dilfer (head) also hurt, Shaun Hill could finish out the season starting.
