Brent Jones wanted SF to draft him, and so they did. TE Vernon Davis is a San Francisco 49er. Good choice with the #6 pick?

And with his second first-round selection, #22 overall, 49ers coach Mike Nolan has gone defense with Manny Lawson, DE, North Carolina State. Both Lawson and Davis should be instant starters for San Fran, right?

I think Davis pick is terrible. Not that I'm knocking Davis. But SF has so many more pressing needs to fill than I tight end who doesn't block. They should have traded the pick and gotten more draft choices.

According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, "San Francisco got the great receiving tight end, probably the best pure receiver in the draft, in Vernon Davis."

I thought Santonio Holmes was one of the best recievers in the draft. I am not a huge NCAA fan, but I heard that Holmes is fast. Does he have the hands too?

Holmes is a great route runner...don't know about his hands though.

Vernon Davis and Manny Lawson...great draft for the 49ers. Davis will be among the top TEs in the game in a couple of years. Lawson will be a great pass rusher...something the Niners don't have a clue on. Niners are far away from contension but they took a nice step here.

No question they had a lot of holes to fill. I think they did a good job getting the best offensive impact player on the board in Davis at #6. You can never overestimate the value of having a big target with good hands in the middle of the field, especially with a young QB. Still not 100% sold on Lawson, but they do need a pass rusher and Nolan seems high on him.
