Re: NFL Draft Prospect Vernon Davis

Everybody under the sun seems to be hyping Maryland TE Vernon Davis to hell and back - the papers, TV shows, Mel Kiper Jr., NFL GMs, even Davis himself has gotten into the act.

The latest is former San Francisco 49ers TE Brent Jones, who according to this article called Davis "a guy that you have to have, especially if he's there and especially with the 49ers, because we don't really have a weapon right now on the offensive side of the ball... You need to have somebodythat puts fear into the heart of defenses to allow other things to happen, to take pressure off of the running game, the receivers."

Now, I know the guy's good... but is he THAT good? A top 5 pick?

Re: NFL Draft Prospect Vernon Davis

It would be hard for me to argue for a tight end to ever be a top 6 pick. I know they can be a valuable part of an offense and a great weapon but will there ever be a tight end that will make enough of a difference to warrant such a high pick?

Tony Gonzalez was the 13th pick when he came out and he has been a great tight end for quite a few years. Antonio Gates wasn't even drafted. Shannon Sharpe was selected in the 7th round. Alge Crumpler was a second round pick. These are some of the best tight ends over the past 10-15 years (Crumpler might be a stretch to fight that category though) and none of them was even a top 10 pick. Sharpe, probably the greatest receiving tight end ever, was a 7th rounder and Gates wasn't even drafted.

For Vernon Davis to be worth a #6 pick he needs to be a game changer. He definetly has potential to be one of the top tight ends in the league but I still don't know if he (or any tight end) will be productive enough to warrant a #6 pick. He will need to be a consistent 75 catch, 1000 yard receiver for a few years and I don't know many tight ends that can put those kind of numbers on the board.
