According to the Associated Press, "Quarterback Alex Smith will miss the San Francisco 49ers' game against Baltimore on Sunday, but won't need surgery on his separated right shoulder... Coach Mike Nolan said Monday the 49ers won't set a target return date for Smith until Thursday, when the swelling subsides in his shoulder." Trent Dilfer will start in his place.

ESPN.com is reporting Smith is seeking a second opinion, and may choose to undergo season-ending surgery. Wow, can you believe that!

That's their franchise QB...if he shuts it down, the 49ers are toast...Dilfer was only good when he had he Raven D backing him.

I'll start off by saying that I have been a Forty-Niners fan since the days of Joe Montana back in the Eighties.

If Alex Smith is done, I agree 100% with Gotham that the Niners are too!

From a fantasy standpoint, Frank Gore's value will take a big hit if Dilfer can't at least keep the defenses honest so what that means is the receivers have got to hold onto the balls thrown to them better than they have been recently!

Looks like Smith will be good to go this Sunday, at least according to ESPN.

The real problem with SF is their defense. Against the Giants, there was no resistance to the run.
