San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft

San Francisco is actively talking about trading their first round pick, according to the Sacramento Bee. They're willing to move up or down, depending upon the quality of an offer. However, if they stay put, odds are they'll draft Ohio State LB A.J. Hawk to replace Julian Peterson. Sounds like a smart pick to me, so why would they consider moving up or down? That DOESN'T make sense.

Re: San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft

Trading makes all the sense in the world. This is a team that needs almost everything. Offensively they are ok but in need of some big playmakers and even more so, depth. Defensively they are in need of a defense. No one in SF is under any delusion that this is a one year turn around team. This is a long term project. This is a team in a building stage. The more picks the more pieces they can add to the puzzle. Hawk would be great as would Vernon Davis but so would three or four additional middle round players. Additionally, SF has a long list of free agents next year meaning they could lose a substantial number of players now on the roster. The more the merrier. Oh and they actually have the cap space to sign a bunch of players.

Re: San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft

Like Larry Allen? They've apparently signed him.

True, this is a team that needs a lot of help in a lot of different areas. Maybe trading down would help them. But they need a LB and they like Hawk. So why not draft him?

Like you said, nothing they do this years going to turn it completely around, so why not get the best quality pieces you can in place, work free agency next year, draft smart, and maybe by 2008 you'll be in shape to contend?
